G&L Club Part 4

For the past couple of weeks, my band has been recording. Since I own multiple basses, I always take multiple basses. The most recent has been my 2010 G&L JBass and my L2500, or my 78 PBass and my L2500. I just couldn't get a good (recorded) sound from the Fender or the JBass. My L2500 hit home runs, on all tracks, every time. I recorded through my Acoustic Image Clarus II, with a line going into the studio preamp. As a local monitor, I had my Schroeder 1210L. The bass settings were passive, series, treble & bass up full, both pickups, with volume adjusted as needed.
Wow. That L2500 is an awesome instrument, and it always works. Every time.

Here's a vid with a recording I did using an L2000 and a VT deluxe direct to the board. The vid is terrible, but the recording is pretty good. Love the sound of that thing.

ASAT is in... had some time to run a test vs a Bongo 5 HH, Sterling HH, Fender P
Wow is the ASAT a growly beast. It reminds me of my old Sterling H which was all growl but I'd take the ASAT tone over the Sterling H. More flexible, more ways of changing up that grit. The EQ is so different vs the others that it takes time to get used to but its still VERY flexible.
I'll take an ASAT over a Sterling H any day... I still prefer my Sterling HH, a little more versatile with the pickup selector & EQ. The Sterling HH can come close to the smooth round upper mids of the P bass with the mids cut, pickup selector dead center. The Sterling HH ergonomics are also better.
The ASAT & the P bass are pretty much opposite goals tonally.
The ASAT is better at grit & snarl then the Sterling HH is by a little bit but again the Sterling HH exceeds the ASAT by a lot in the warm round subtle upper mid category (ie mocking a P bass)
I really like the ASAT its a total keeper & the 17.5mm spacing just feels right at home. Neck is a little thicker than the Sterling HH but thats comfortable.
The ASAT is the best 2nd bass to my Sterling HH that I've found for sure

Gets you something approaching a J bass tone from having a single coil option.
You'd have to do some re-wiring, and replace the two position coil tap with a three position switch.

I've had the coil tap rewire done to both of my USA L 2500's fretted and fretless and like it very much.
I may remove the preamp from my 2500 fretted and change to indy pickup switches so I can get a PJ or reverse PJ sound, but still on the fench about that.
this mod was donefor me at the G&L dealer in Green Bay wi. for $85.00 including the switch. Dick's Music Shoppe is where I purchased my frist G&L bck in 1986.

Changing the series/parallel switch to a 3-position series/single-coil/parallel. Single coil is clearer than both series and parallel, and sounds fantastic with the G&L pickups, though you will get single coil hum with soloed pickups much like a Jazz bass.
Got my g&l tribute l2000 bass today. 315 during the crazy musiciansfriend coupon stacking.
