I'm becoming convinced that only 10% of the folks on TB actually have a clue, and only 4% of them know how to articulate that clue into a reasonable statement (regardless of whether that statement is contradictory or not).

I think you are being generous with the 10% . There's a lot of sheep and you have to wade through all of their posts to find actual knowledge. To be clear, there is a lot of good information and knowledge. Just put your filter in place

FWIW, I've yet to play a wood that I didn't like. I've played basses that sounded crappy because of poor setups, or sucky electronics but never a bass that sounded crappy because of the type of wood. Although I have played basses that just didn't resonate or sound good, it wasn't the type of wood, it was just that particular piece of wood or the combination of neck and body wood that didn't work well together.

I have played my L2000 in to a handful of outboard preamps and this hasn't really been the case for me- scwbb to me is all about additional low midrange punch moreso than actual "bass", so a boost at 40Hz-80Hz (I can't remember what freq Audere uses for their Bass control) might just add mud. I actually had an Audere pre in my Darkstar'd Jazz bass for awhile and had the two pickups wired up in a similar scheme to the seperate coils in single coil with bass boost (so full signal from the bridge pickup and lows only from the neck pickup)- it was massive sounding to an almost unwieldy degree in that setting!
That said- I have a feeling the versatility of the Audere will make the single coil with bass boost unnecessary anyway, especially with the Z-modes. I recall one of those modes had a similar effect as scwbb in a more "active" fashion!

I don't have an Audere 3ZB preamp but the Classic 4-band - no Z-mode switch. I think I want to keep the option for OMG, so I need to figure out how you wired your bass so that you had parallel/inner coil/series with OMG option so that I'm not having to connect one of the OMG caps to where the pickup connects to the preamp - I don't think that'll work out well. I've attached how my bass is wired now - could you take a look and see how I'd need to change it so that I could have parallel/inner coil/series with switchable OMG mode? I'm going to skip the pickup selector switch and install an on/on switch for turning OMG on and off.

You basically just get 50% less bass cut. If you never roll off the bass all the way, you won't notice much difference, theoretically.

I only ever roll the bass back about 50%. So, a 500K bass pot all the way down would be like a 1 meg bass pot rolled off half-way? Full up there wouldn't be a difference between the two, then?

It should not affect the "full up" tone. The capacitor is bypassed in "full up" and as you roll back the pot, the ratio of the signal between the bypass and the cap changes to favor the cap, thus rolling off more lows.

I don't recall if the G&L pot is a log or linear taper pot; if it's log, a 500k pot won't be the same as the physical "50%" point on the 1Meg pot, but it will be at the point where the bass frequency is cut back ~50%, wherever that happens to be physically on the 1Meg.

Wouldn't it most likely be an audio pot? I've looked on the G&L website and they don't list whether it's audio or log - probably because they want you to think theirs is the only replacement.

It was originally (and still in their wiring diagrams) a Reverse Log taper (also called "C" taper- just the reverse of a normal audio/log taper), but I know at least one person bought one from the G&L store and just recieved a linear pot. I think this means that the real "50%" point would be somewhere near the end of the pot's travel as you are turning it down, so if I had it right you wouldn't be missing much with a 500K pot. You would just want to be sure to get a similar taper or you will get a pot that has all the cut in one small turn of the pot.

Wire it the way I told you way back before-
"To wire it the way I did it, the neck switch would be identical to DavePlaysBass's. The Bridge pickup will look like the neck pickup switch, except you just reverse the position of the black/green wires as well as the yellow/white wires. In other words, put the green wire where the black is and vice-versa, and put the yellow where the white is and vice-versa. Then instead of wiring the SCBB capacitor to the pickup selector on the bridge pickup, you just wire it to ground as on the other switch."

Except that you'll need to lift the green pickup wire from its connection on the copper plate of the bridge pickup (you'll need to wire on an extension wire from the green coil to the coil selector switch). As you have it now, the green wire from the pickup coil is always grounded because it is attached to the grounded copper plate, but for my method it needs to be lifted! I am fairly certain that's why it didn't work before when you wired it as I described to you...

I just got my ASAT as well. I'll get some nice pics of it tomorrow. It's freaking awesome! It sounds awesome. It looks awesome. It plays awesome. It's just awesome.

I seriously wish that I found these earlier. It really has a killer tone that I haven't been able to get with other basses so easily. I was messing around with it plugged into my REDDI and recording gear. The mids it puts out are insane, and it's got a nice growly tone to it the way that I play. I'm really enjoying it so far.

Tomorrow I'm plugging it into my rig and rocking out, and I can't wait to get to rehearsal this weekend with it.

Yeah... my only other 4 string is a black Sterling HH signed by Sublime that looks pretty silly at church, this one will be more traditional.

The hollowbody is simply bad ass... it will get played ALOT vs just be in Tom B's infamous basement !

The ASAT Semi hollow I had was amazing..Cept it was unlined fretless ebony..
It was awesome as far as a fretless goes.
But I am not all that on fretless, sooooo I let it go for a G.A.S. induced purchase of a fretted bass.

Kinda miss it..It was one helluva fretless for sure.
I can see me buying another ASAT Semi Hollow someday in the not too distant future if one comes along for the right price.

audio or log

I've been working with electronics for 25 years, and I have never seen/heard of a pot with ''audio'' taper. The pots I know of are either linear or logarithmic, so I think that audio taper is just a different word for a pot with log taper. This makes sence since all pots used in Audio are with log taper...
