G&L Club Part 4

The JB2 is a great bass, if you're not real hung up on "fer-real J tone."
The one I had really was not very J like until I ditched the pups.

Yeah, not everyone likes those uber-microphonic JB-2 pickups.

But then, some people like 'em enough to order a spare set for a project bass.

I never had a problem with mine, but wanted more low mid punch, so I put QP's in my USA JB-2. What I now have, as a result, is a hi-qual Fender bass with an identity crisis. The sound is "P-bass with a spice rack." To my left hand, it's a pure J. To my right hand, it's schitzy; the control layout is P, the pickups to rest the thumb on are J (I usually use the neck pickup, which is favored in the controls, except for certain songs, like "You Oughta Know"). I'll be throttling this instrument tonight at Apache Gold Resort Casino, and sounding god-like. This is a fill-in gig; my second with this band, and a third comes in a few more weeks. Everything is top-notch. I hope they offer me the #1 spot, especially after my main project revealed that it has a lot of work left to do, in the wake of last night's gig. The audience of adoring friends gave us an A, but I give us a C-, and made a green room speech during the break that Lombardi would have been proud of. As has been my history, gigs that immediately follow a clunker tend to be great performances; as if there is a chip on my shoulder. Tonight's gonna be a good night.

sub'ed. Just played an M2500 yesterday...not ready to jump in yet, but thinking about it. The new M line is enticing me. String spacing may still be an issue but I plan on spending more time in store on it...the best B string I ever encountered on a 34" scale bass hands down!

I've experienced varying degrees of 34" B nirvana on every metro I owned. It seems humbuckers sense more string movement..the G&L seems to benefit from this, perhaps the 6 bolt neck joint factors in as well.
