Thanks, y'all. As I mentioned it was a theoretical question. My only objection ever to my beloved L2K's is my built-in dislike for pickup selector switches; I like balance pots or 2 volumes ...my problem, I know. How about a way to rig up 2 volume pots, a la jazz bass? Again, theoretical, but is it possible w/out physical modding of plate or body? Don't worry, as I said, I no longer have one around the house to tempt myself ;). Thanks.

Hi:

I want to one day be a member of this club, but need some help figuring out which G&L would best complement my bass, and thought this club could help. I have been looking at G&L's for a while now since they are a lefty friendly company, and you can get a variety of finishes that most lefties only could wish Fender would make.

Anyways, I have a 2005 American Deluxe Jazz Bass right now that I absolutely love. It has an 18 v pre, no passive option. I would like to get a G&L bass to complement it. At first, was thinking about the new L-2000 bass, but honestly, it has no passive option, and that bugs me. I thought about getting a sb-1, as I really like p-basses, and they are very affordable compared to an American P. Also thought about the L-2000 since it could cop both a Stingray and a P bass tone (series, front pick up selected, passive). I play Contemporary Christian, Classic Rock, and Gospel.

Any thoughts on what would be a good complement?

The L2000 does indeed have passive mode.
You might also look at the new M2000, which has three band eq, and a differently flavored preamp and pickups that might work better for your needs.

I've not played an M2000, it's new, but:
The L2000 has passive mode, and the eq is cut only, bass and treble; sounds fairly big, organic...
The M2000 is active only (I think) and has bass, mid, and treble boost and cut, I think; and sounds more active, modern...again, I've not played one.

this is a fairly accurate assesment. i've played an m2k. it does sound more modern while retaining that g&l sound, just not quite as meaty as the l2k. but really close. the m2k is a pretty cool bass but i'd still take an l2k over it anyday.

Does anybody have a tribute sb-2? What are your thoughts on them? I may end up with one in a trade and am wondering what I should expect. Where are the tributes made? Do they go through heavy QC when they get here? etc. Thanks in advance. Also if Tributes don't count in the G&L club my apologies, didn't find a tribute club in my search.

I don't have one but played one of these in a store, trying for pedals. I liked it very much. as long as you don't pay over the going used rate, you should be happy with that one.

Cool... Thanks, Chef. I still probably wouldn't do it, though. The truth that most subs to this thread know is that an L2K has so many sounds available that you can probably find several that you want if you're willing to take the time. It's part of the fun!

I have a US SB-2. I thought for sure I would need a tone pot. I even bought the parts and have them sitting here so I could add it.

Then I actually played the SB-2 in a band setting (3 piece, jamming Blues stuff). All the stuff I thought I wanted to use the Tone pot to tame just disappeared in the mix and it sounds awesome!

I've been playing it with Circle K rounds on it, but now I really want to try some TI Flats. I think that might make it even better - both playing around at home and in a band mix.

Do not fear the SB-2 with no tone pot!!

Thanks, the simplicity did intrigue me and I've heard great things about the pickups(tribute uses the same ones as USAs) in the mix. I get to go check it out tonight after me and the guy are both done with our respective band practices.

I think I could definitely live with the Vol/Vol setup but maybe I would think about a Master Vol/Tone stacked knob and a pickup blend knob with a center detent...

I'm just really looking at getting a quality 4-string, got the 5-string I'm completely satisfied with, why does 4 have to be so hard?? :hiding:

Hey guys, had a question about my G&L US JB fretless that is for sale. I have always assumed and am pretty sure these pickups are single coils, but wanted to confirm that they are from the G&L experts. I'm at work so I can't solo a pu to listen for the hum! ; )

The web lists them as:
2 G&L vintage Alnico jazz pickups

OK, I want in the G&L club! I've had my '87 L2000 since about 1996, and it didn't get a lot of love until about a year ago.. mostly because I hung up playing altogether for most of that stretch of time, but also because I was playing an American Standard P.. brought the L2000 out of the closet and into a rehearsal last year, and haven't looked back. It's pure thunder, no two ways about it.

I have an '81 on the way, and I CAN'T WAIT to get it!! I see everyone else using their credit cards for stuff they can't afford, so I figured, "what the hell!?" :bassist:

In the meantime, here's the '87... love this bass.
