G&L Club Part 5

Here's my bass:

Mine has an additional Dimarzio Will Power pickup in the neck spot and an extra volume and switch.

I've found that I rarely use the preamp in my L2000 Tribute, so I removed it.

Here's the wiring diagram for the L2000/L2500 series basses.

Trace the circuit from the pickup selector switch and you'll see that it goes pickup selector switch > treble pot > bass pot > volume > preamp/active switch > output. There are two white wires connected to the middle volume pot lug. Cut the one going from the volume to the preamp right at the volume pot. Cut the one connected to the passive/active switch about two inches from the switch. Cut the white wire coming from the preamp to the back of the bass pot right at the pot. Connect the remaining white wire from the volume pot to the white wire connected to the output jack, and you have now made the bass passive only and freed up a switch hole.

If you want to do the separate series/single/parallel switches then you'll need two DPDT on/on/on switches (I'd probably buy three in case you screw one up). Here is a diagram for separate series/inner single/parallel switches:

I used a push/pull volume pot for that middle switch wired so that the capacitors are on the opposite end from the pot part.

Once you have the preamp cut out of the circuit and the first part of the wiring connected in passive you're just redoing the switches and volume pot and then connecting them to the pickup selector switch. I'd cut the white wires connecting the pickup selector switch to the stock series/parallel switch right at the switch and use them to connect to the new switches.

Sorry if that seems really complicated! I'd be happy to walk you through it if it's something you'd want to do.

Looking for a little help here...I have an opportunity to pick up a 1995 G and L Asat Semi Hollow Custom shop bass.

Asking price is 1800, but it maybe a trade for my new Ric 4003.

What do you guys think? Worth it?

That's a helluva bass you're looking at.

Questions to you:
Do you love your new Rick? If so, don't trade it.
Can you afford both? Well then, my friend, make us proud!

Think like this:
1: The Rick is a one of a kind sound (and feel). Want that? You gotta have a Rick. But while it can work in many applications, it's not what most consider to be a very versatile bass. Plays great.

2. The ASAT on the other hand is a very versatile bass. You can get a lot of different sounds out of this puppy and they all sound great. You can't get a Rick sound, tho. You need a Rick for that. But the ASAT is a great axe.

They both play great, so you should get both. If you can afford only one, get the one that matches your style.

Need a little help determining the value of this Beauty!

I took the dive and traded my Ric 4003 Maple Glow for a G&L ASAT Semi-Hollow.

This is what I know about it...

It was custom built for Steve Kinch of Manfred Mann...

Body...Swamp Ash with Twin Voice Chambers, Double Binding with F-Hole

Neck... Quarter-Sawn Birdseye Maple with Birdseye Maple Board w/Bone Nut, 12" Radius, 1.5" (38.1mm) @nut

Tuning Keys...Custom G&L Ultra Light with Tapered String Posts

Bridge...Saddle Lock with Chrome plated Brass Saddles

Controls...G&L Tri-Tone Active/Passive Electronics, 3 Way Mini Toggle Pickup Selector, Series/Parallel Mini-Toggle,
Mini Toggle Pre Amp Control (Off/On With High End EQ Boost)

Any thoughts? There is some basic wear on the bass, but for a 95 it's is very good condition and plays like a dream! Not to mention the sound!

I have the sense that Ric's have a much higher resale value then G&L's. I don't know of anything distinct of that year or model that warrant such a high used price for that G&L. Great looking bass though, maybe you can talk them down on the price.

Yeah already completed the trade today...def a better bass than the Ric in my opinion...

I posted more details and pics in the previous post. Thanks for the feedback!

A G&L mod I just discovered. The Carvin bridge used on the SB4000 is a direct bolt on replacement for the G&L bridge. I just put one on my JB. It knocked almost a half pound off the weight and it nows plays like a Jazz bass. It also allows me to get the strings lower. The bridge is less than $50 from Carvin.
