Knowing that I'm an active J bass guy at heart, and, knowing that I find the L2500 too low-fi and wooly, you think an M2500 would be enjoyable to me?

Do NOT use steel wool on pickups! :eek: Don't use it anywhere on the bass. The steel filings will get stuck in the pickup magnets and go down into the cavities and cause short circuits and make a terrible mess. I wouldn't bother cleaning them (makes no difference in the tone) but if you must, a metal polish that won't leave goop behind, like Never Dull, should work.

Series mode is always noisier than parallel, but it shouldn't buzz "like crazy". Diagnosing is not easy because of all the circuitry in there. Does it still buzz in passive mode? Does the buzz go away when you touch the strings, bridge or knobs?

What needs to be cleaned on the pickups? If it's the pole pieces, you might consider completely unscrewing them and polishing/cleaning them separate from the pickups.

Somebody else should chime in on whether this is a good idea, though, as I don't know what happens to the insides of the pickups when the pole pieces are removed - only that they are adjustable.

If "towards the neck" gives you series then I think there's an issue with your series setting. Does it buzz in the other setting in active mode? If not, then you just need to analyze the series/parallel switch - not all of the electronics. The series/parallel switch is fairly simple - even if you need to rewire some of it or all of it. I can point you to wiring diagrams if you need them.

If the bass works and is quiet in all of the settings while in passive mode then it could be that the preamp or the active/passive switch is not correctly grounded. It could also be a shielding issue.

One more reason to remove the preamp altogether and go fully passive!! I did that and used the empty switch hole to wire up separate series/single/parallel switches for each pickup, and to use a push/pull pot to toggle between stock series and "OMG mode", otherwise known as "single-coil with bass boost". No more battery or hissy preamp for me! If you want to know how to do this I can help you with that too.

a stiff bristled wire brush, tooth brush sized, with a lil bit of caig deoxit will clean those poles, and lube the threads a bit via seepage.

back them out enough that you can clean the oles without marring the cover.
emery tape works too

This sounds like a really cool mod. Would like to know more.
