So after making room in my stable I've acquired a couple of G&L basses. An LB-100 P bass and a JB, which is a true traditional Jazz Bass. I'm blown away by both of these basses. Having owned multiple Fenders, Musicman's, Nordy's and whatnot, I'm very impressed by these.
First off, the construction is very strong. From the straightness and robust feel of the quarter sawn necks, to the impeccable fretwork done on the Plek machine, these basses play very easily.
The pickups give both basses that vintage growl and punch. The LB-100 has a bit more brightness than the Fender '62 re-issue custom shop pickup. When sitting in with the band this makes the LB-100 have really great cut-through and presence. The natural sustain caused by the tank-like construction of the LB-100 gives it a very tight sound, preventing muddiness and giving it an almost Jazz bass-like clarity, yet true P-bass tone.
The JB has the same strong construction and sustain. Just picking up this bass the first time and playing it unplugged impressed me a lot. The warmth and growl is addicting when plugged-in. The tuners are very strong and smooth turning, as are the volume knobs, they are also dead silent.
Downsides: The only downsides to both of these basses that I can think of is weight. I've not weighed them yet, but I would guess 9.5-10 lbs. For me this is not a problem, since I'm not too picky about weight. My former Fender P-bass was 8.0 lbs and didn't have the sustain that these do. So I'm really becoming a believer in the weight/sustain trade-off. I wouldn't change anything about these basses though, including the weight. I just consider this a downside since lots of folks are concerned about weight because of shoulder issues and long gigs.
Conclusion: In my opinion, I feel that these basses are simply made at higher-quality tolerances than their competitors. Combined with the custom shop-like features that can be ordered for the prices (Quarter sawn necks, paint schemes, PLEK), these basses can't really be beat for what you get at the price. Tone, feel and look are all there. If you are concerned about getting a light-weight bass I recommend trying to call the factory and talk to them about it to make sure they can build it to your liking.
