G&L Club Part 6

The black ice is sweet, they used silver to highlight the grain. It's the first time they've tried a finish like this and I think they hit a home run. As far as differences, the neck. The neck on my MIA is way superior in my opinion, much better feel and stability. Frets are finished way better Tribs are very sharp on the edges. I also think the body woods used are better quality, overall a better build.

This bass is currently on ebay. It's an early 80's. Have not seen an L-2000 w/a body shape like this before. Altered? Prototype? or did such a shape exist? It's cool and wouldn't put it past Leo for early 80's experimenting.

That is definitely not original, and I really doubt it is a prototype. People regularly alter G&Ls, unfortunately.

I've never seen anything like that.
"Ew," personally.

It actually has slight reference to some Leo era MM/G&L guitar bodies. Seems like someone was attempting to slim down the original shape. Since the playability and sound were most likely not altered and personal mods are the right of the owner - I've seen much worse designs.

I second the "ew". Maybe they were trying to lighten it (I have an old ash body L2000 that weighs a ton). But not very attractive IMO. YMMV.

As far as mods being the right of the owner - absolutely true. But just because you can do something it doesn't mean you should do it.

I have been trolling the internet lately looking for early G&L basses. Well, today I happened to stumble across this early 80's L-1000 from a music store in Florida. I called them and they told me they just got it from the original owner. It's in great condition with a perfect neck and electronics. The price they were asking seemed very good compared to similar items listed here in TB so I had them ship it to me. I should have it Friday. Pretty excited.
