G&L Club Part 6

You can have coil taps added to the M Series if you order one built.

The L series "sound like an old G&L:' raw, woolly, big lows, big mids, not a tone of "modern treble sheen."
The M series are cleaner, clearer "more today sounding," and offer three band active eq and a blend knob.

Sorry, but that is incorrect.

One of the design targets of the M series was to simplify the controls; make them friendlier, less intimidating. To that end, the coil switching and active/passive switches were removed and the pickup select switch was replaced by a smart blend pot.

Additionally, the M pickups are wound differently than the L pickups to take advantage of the M preamp. Because of this, putting coil switching back in would require yet another pickup wind and possibly a change in the preamp to work well. While it is technically feasible to add coil switching to the M pickups, it is not offered and not recommended by G&L.

I've misunderstood this then.
I thought I'd seen it done, and, I thought I'd asked Rocket Music this, but, my brain does weird junk sometimes.

The leads needed to do the switching, though VERY short and inside the covers, are there. In fact, I have pictures of that somewhere over at BassesByLeo.

It's possible that Rocket offers the mod as a service. The problem will be drilling a hole for the proper switch. Push-pulls would be very difficult (bordering on not worth the trouble).

I certainly wouldn't do it to any bass I owned.

My sb2 took six weeks. My L2K order was placed back on March 8th. No explanation as to why one is taking so long while the other was relatively fast.

They make stuff in batches for different basses. Maybe your order for the L2K went in right as they were finishing their last batch of those, and your SB-2 order went in right as they were starting a batch of SB-2s.

I wish I could get a straight answer. I was told in the beginning of may that it was almost done. I was told two weeks ago it was just about ready to ship. I think this is the last time I place a custom order. I can't get an answer from G&L or the place I ordered it from.

I had to replace the neck on my L-2500 a couple of years ago. It was big ole fat pain in the azz to actually get to talk to anybody on the phone at G&L. Fortunately, they actually turned my bass around, with the new neck, in just a couple of weeks. Definitely the hardest part was just dealing with the not knowing what the heck was going on.
