G&L Club Part 6

Still enjoying my LB 100! I'm really enjoying the #8 neck and the thickness back to front. I'm wondering about a pickup a change. It sounds great but I'm always looking for improvements. Anyone have any thoughts on the G&L alnicos p pickups? Bill Lawrence pu certainly get a lot of love.

adivin, your profile speaks of a man with great taste in gear. (Mine speaks of a man whose appetite for great gear exceeds his musical talents by quite a lot.)

The LB-100 with a jazz-width neck is an easy sell and it's on my GAS list. Why'd you decide on the 12" radius as opposed to the 7.5"?

Yeah, get an MFD in there! ;)

I guess that's the beauty of the P bass, eh? Rolling pickups is easy and cheap. It's amazing how different a P bass can sound with a few mix 'n match tweeks. Great fun.

No experience with the Lawrence P46 yet, although I do have one sitting here.

I have a few of the aftermarket pickups installed in my P basses right now, including Bart, EMGPx, Delano, Nordstrand. All great pickups, but my personal fave is still the hefty MFD.

It's just a matter of preference. I have two other basses with a 12" radius and I like the feel. It's just what I'm used to.

Here are the long awaited sound clips of my M3500 (M2500 with an extra pickup added at the neck):



Tone differences are subtle because of the 1954 LaBella strings. Its a little buzzy because my son is used to playing lighter strings.

O.K. question for the G&L faithfull:

How would you compare the tone of the L1500 to that of an SB-2?

the SB-2 I played had this nice meaty grind and rolling in some of the bridge pickup seemed to balance & temper that and brighten it up without loosing the growl. Anyway, that's the best way I can describe it in words.

The L1500 has a humbucker similar to the basic stingray humbucker, which has a similar growl (but the SB-2 was more gnarly than any stingray I've ever heard). But the L1500 is this MFD pickup like the L series....so what's it sound like in comparison?

I'd kind of like to know about that, too. And how the 1500 compares to a Sterling H. I have a Sterling H (and an SB-2). The Sterling has 2 coils plus a phantom coil. You can run it with both coils in Series (for a super in-your-face mid-heavy sound), both coils in Parallel (for a Stingray-like sound, except from a ceramic pickup), and Single Coil, using the bridge side coil with the Phantom Coil for noise cancelling. Does the L-1500 work the same way?
