G&L Club Part 7

Say, I wanted to slip back in and ask you about your SB-2 with the EMG BTC control. I'm thinking of dropping a BTC into my Kiloton. My main questions are (1)Did you notice definitely whether or not the MFD pickups overdrove the front end of that BTC control? (2)If there was distortion, could it have come from the loose wires?" Please forgive me if you've already addressed those issues, but I don't remember, and I hate to pay a hundred bucks for an item I can't use. Thanks! (BTW, I vote for the launch button.)

Hey! I came to to the conclusion that with a fresh battery I could redline the front of the pre if I hit the strings harder than I ever play. Under normal operation I can safely say it would not occur. I cant say how that would change with a depleted battery.

The intermittent connection resulted in loss of signal so I dont think that was a factor.

Ill just give you mine if you want it. Shoot me a PM!

Great to know. I'm 99%+ a finger player and only pick the strings hard enough to achieve the tone I like, so I don't see a problem. I sent you a PM. Thank you.

I posted in the "buy in a heartbeat" thread
L-1005 in white pearl, ebony fb, CLF headstock

update: I've been talking to Greg @RocketMusic
I may not be able to get white and ebony, but I might be able to make something happen on the 5-string Wunkay angle that won't require custom-shop kinda $. Something's brewing in Fullerton, that's all I can say, stay tuned (the clue is: remember Big Chonks?)

While I am not one who suffers actual G.A.S.*, I'd have loved an opportunity to try out an L-1000 for a few days to see if I might like it better than the SB-1.
That's the only true certain downside nowadays of being a lefty, IMHO, the short duration want to try out this or that instrument, as opposed to owning them.

Curious, how do the fundamentals compare between the Mahogany and what the black one is? (is it Alder or Swamp Ash?)

*The forever disclaimer for 4 strings is them offering the El Toro again, be it CLF or CS. Oh, and a Walnut and Maple Rick 4003 that has actually good QC. Oh, and...

P.S.

This is of course not my way of asking if you'd lend one, I'm not even on the same continent :-)

They are quite different, IME.

The '81 uses the rear coil for SCM, while the '14 uses the front.

The '14 is indeed alder.

With the same strings and setup,
The '81 has this big bottom, and biting top-end, with a bit of a dip in the mids.
Has a bit of a Stingray vibe, tonally, but with the depth of a mid-placed pickup.

The '14, has more mids, and overall rounder voice. For me, it gives the P-bass tone I hear in my head, but could never get out of an actual P-bass.

Thanks for the information!

Mahogany to me, on bass, sounds like it has a very present 1st and 2nd overtones when playing the lowest 5 or so notes in standard tuning.
I am considering several 5 string options, and it seems overly present in all the models which I otherwise fancy, hence my curiosity on it being paired up with a beefy and wide frequency response pick-up in the MFD.

Re: P-bass tone, have you spent some time with an SB-1?
Curiosity about the L-1000 aside, I've been nothing but pleased with its tone for the 3 years I've owned it.

Until recently, I had an SB-2T, that I owned for roughly 8 years.

I also started out on a P-bass.

After a number of years, I came to the conclusion that I don't like the change in timbre between the E/A & D/G.

Yes, the SB-1/2 are good sounding basses, and deliver "that" tone, but it isn't what I personally go for anymore.

Funny, that is precisely why I was always curious about the L-1000.
The change in timbre aside the split-coil MFD is exactly what I want, so I am looking to see if reversing it (in a 35'' Sandberg due next spring, rather than spoil my SB-1 if I were to ever sell it) solves that very problem before giving up on split-coil altogether.
Of course, people already do report that it helps, but one can never truly know until playing themselves, psychoacoustics and whatnot factored in as well.

Again, appreciate the info!

I still have, but don't play anymore, an Ibanez gsr200, which has a reverse P.
To my ears, it helps, to an extent.
When playing in the upper register, the effect is there, with the D/G now having this "roundness" that stands out against the "tighter" sounding E/A.

We all hear/experience things differently, so I won't try to dissuade you from exploring your options.

Interesting - but honestly for me - I'd prefer they build an L2500 with slightly tighter spacing. Jut a Not Ibanez narrow. Just slightly more narrow than the current 5.

Mention Big Chonks and you have my attention.
