I'm not convinced this is a step in the right direction—interesting as it is... P5's just don't have good B-strings at 34" scale length. The pickup (MFD or not) is just not in the right spot. My L2500 and M2500 both make that point convincingly and then make up for it when you add in some bridge pickup.

Question: Does anyone know if 70's pickup placement is available on a JB (US or Custom Shop)?

As far as Tribute, I'll say this. The Tribute JB I just sold smoked the Fender Vintera 70's jazz bass I ordered (and returned for a defective neck) in quality for less than half the price. I had upgraded with Dimarzio pickups. Obviously won't need to do that with the Kiloton. Some Hipshot Ultra Lite tuners could be a good upgrade, but the tuners on my Tribute JB were worked quite well and were smooth.

Custom shop will do anything you want. But all of the G&L jazz basses I've seen seem to favor the early 60s bridge position.

Do any of you have a bass in Matcha Green? I've seen several JBs listed on Reverb but the color varies wildly from more blue/cool to almost olive green. Can anyone describe it in real life and/or post some pics that show the color accurately?

Thanks for that. However, pics show quite a variety out there. I'm just trying to figure what is actually the color people are seeing.

There's a chance that the strings in this are from some European maker unknown in the UK, let alone the US, so trying to work out which exact ones they are might be a waste of time....



....but which commonly available strings would get closest to this sound on an SB-1? The tone seems too clean to be x, yet too firm to be y, so I'm already out of ideas :confused:

If you neither know nor care, just enjoy the excellent playing :woot:

I see (or hear) your point. D'Addario half-rounds?? Just a WAG. Why not post a question in the comments section of YouTube and see if you get a response?

I'm really of no use, but a) that could be my SB-1 (it's not, but it's a twin), and b) I get a very similar sound from mine with good old slightly worn D'Addario XLs (nickel).

I love the tone and clarity of the SB-1. It's kind of become my go-to studio bass and has so far been on ~7-8 albums or projects since I got it a couple years ago.

Tijeras, NM?? Really???? I lived in Edgewood for many years. Played at Molly's when I had nothing better to do. But back to strings, I think D'Addario half-rounds are often overlooked strings. I played some for a few years on a '70 Fender P-bass I had (and wish I still had). I haven't tried them on any of my G&Ls, but that video sounds kinda like that 'tweener sound. As you say, they could also be well-broken-in nickel round EXLs. Elixir nickel rounds also come to my mind. I play those on my Kiloton, and the sound is similar.

Tijeras, indeed! We're ~11mi south of the village, sort of at the top of the mountains. My wife does most of her shopping in Edgewood. We go to ABQ as little as necessary, but more than desired. I've played Molly's. It was a good experience, but not my kind of scene.

I've actually got the half rounds on my rosewood-fingerboard LB-100 w/MFD pickup. It's not the same as the maple neck SB-1, but it's a good sound. I may actually go back to a more traditional P pickup in the LB-100, but that's another story. The SB-1 wears rounds, and another P-clone I've had for many years wears flats.

Wild...I have a Tribute LB-100 that I put an MFD pickup into. It also has a Seymour Duncan concentric active EQ, so I have treble and bass both boost and cut. It sounds unbelievable. I can sculpt it for any tone I want, and it still has that MFD sound. I have nickel-wound Ernie Ball Slinkys on it.
