Strings chiming behind the nut!

I have Tribute series Kiloton and L-2000. On both basses, the strings will ring behind the nut while playing. I've had this happen on other basses and stopped it with a simple hair tie wrapped over the headstock to dampen the D and G strings. It wasn't much of an issue to anyone but me, as the ringing/chiming was not getting amplified with those basses, I just knew it was there, so it bugged me. On either of my G&L basses though, the sound gets amplified. It doesn't matter what I'm playing through: amp, headphones, recording interface; my D & G will ring out nonstop from behind the nut, I can't make them stop, and worse yet, it's getting amplified and is clearly audible to others. Any ideas?

Same observation with the G-string on my MIA SB-2 (w/ Chromes, 95-40)

Is your string wound as close to the bottom of the post as possible? So that the string angles downwards from the nut to the post?

Sounds like there is something microphonic in your bass. I had that same issue with a (non-G&L) bass, and it was because the microphonic pickups picked up all vibrations, including those of the strings behind the nut. New pickups cured it.
It doesn't have to be the pickups themselves though. Are there springs beneath your pickups? Have you tried dampening those with a piece of rubber or foam or something?

I have an Audere that I paired with a set of Nordstrand NJ5S pickups in a FrankenJazz and I love it. Like you said, very transparent and a very wide tonal range. The bass looks like hell but my band loves how it sounds

Is it the strings or the tuning keys? I had a similar problem and found the ringing stopped if I pinched the clover on the tuning key. I don't know if it is the source of your issue but I wrote to G&L about it and got some new tuning keys to replace the offenders. That fixed the problem for me.

I have not done anything with the pickups as yet.
