I was told by Memo Romero at G&L that they had stopped Plekking their basses because they were able to set the basses up better without it. That was in early 2021. In mid 2020, when I first inquired about having a new neck made for my '07 USA SB-2, Memo told me it included Plekking of the neck. So it appears sometime after mid 2020, they stopped Plekking their necks, but when did they start? The spec sheet on my 2018 Kiloton doesn't say anything about the neck being Plekked. Ken Baker, who runs the Basses by Leo forum, is the most knowledgeable person I know about G&L specs. He might be able to say if they were plekking in 2017 May, so try bassesbyleo.com/forum.
Looks great. The bottom picture is very likely more representative of the actual colour. The basswood should be just fine as a tonewood and some very nice basses are made using it. There's been this long-standing notion that basswood is somehow very soft and will ding up easily. I've had a few basswood basses—including a G&L Tribute M2000 that's a killer—and I've seen no such effect, any more than it happens with my empress basses. It's likely nonsense. Sonically, based on no proper analytic process, it's seemed more like alder than ash to me. Do check the weight.
My now-sold M-2500 that I bought brand new from The Bass Place (Peoria, AZ.) in nov. 2012, s/n CLF064176, was PLEK-ed and the neck was quartersawn (standard).
Now, what about the B-string on a JB-5?
I own or have owned several 5-string basses. The best B-string is with my L-2500 Custom (1997), and the second best is with my Squier Vintage Modified Precision V. On my Sire MM V7-5 Jazz FL, it was in-between, not bad, not good. On my Sire MM P5-5 (P-Bass) and my Squier Jazz Bass V Steffi Stephan signature, I could not get anything I like. All equipped with either Chromes or GHS flatwounds.
I am hoping the B-string on a JB-5 is as good as on my L-2500 Custom (see below), a very early model with a quite wide nut: 49mm or 1.929" (1-15/16), but I am not sure if a neck that wide has a real impact on the tone and sustain (some people say a P-bass with a 1.75" nut makes it different).
This color is Clear Orange on swamp ash, not solid Tangerine Orange.

Nice! I've got several 2/3-tone/sunburst basses, and I keep wishing one had a maple neck. I really like the satin finish, too!
I was just playing my 3TS & maple L-2k today. Definitely a good combo!
yes, the maple neck is what I really like, and the MOP dots are a nice touch too.
Frosty? We've still got snow in Minny Snowta, but I don't see none in your pitchers...

Here's what looks to be a very good deal on an impressive looking and, it seems to me, somewhat rare Tribute M2000. I am so tempted, but I have so many basses it's ridiculous. But someone out there might like this. (I have no affiliation with Reverb, with the seller, with the seller's sister, his ex-wife, or his cat!
