Hot water from the sink could soften the caps enough. Remove as much water as you can and see if the residual moisture helps it slide on. The heat should have softened it.


If not, solvent could be used. Golf club grips are put on using solvent. If the caps won't go on, you may have the wrong size caps.

I haven't had my hands on an MIK Tribby in a long time. So I can't say how they stack up to modern ones.
I have owned a total of 6 U.S. G&Ls, and still own 4. I also own a later Tribby ('15 I believe)
The Tribby definitely holds it's own against the U.S. made ones.

Model P at full volume, no problem. Bridge at full volume, it's ok but much quieter than the model P. The weird stuff starts when I try to blend the two. Adding the bridge pickup with the model P at any volume doesn't change the sound at all (to my ears). Then just as you turn the bridge up full with the model P also up full, everything thins out and sounds out of phase.

I have taken it to 2 luthiers/ repair guys here in China (one not so good and one who is supposed to be very good) and they both came to the conclusion that it's an issue with how the pickups pair together…. basically they don't.

Is this possible? Is the design of the MFD such that it doesn't play well with other pickups?

ideally I would just order the original MFD P pickup from G&l store but alas, they don't ship to China. The previous owner doesn't have the original pickup either.

So I'm basically playing it as a P bass right now which is fine, still sounds good, but man I wish I could figure out why they won't blend together properly. I guess one day when I leave China I'll try and figure it out but if anyone has any ideas, let me know. Thanks

The pickups are clearly out of phase and your luthier was short on time or short on talent.
I have the reverse situation from you, MFD P and a DiMarzio J. I just soldered and unsoldered all the permutations until it stopped sounding thin.
When both pickups are full there's a slight volume drop, that's the same on a jazz bass.

If you have a soldering iron, it's a very easy thing to fix, it's just a process of elimination of the color combinations.
I've also had this issue on Lakland Chi Sonic pickups and a few jazz basses, so unless it's some very random magnet polarity issue, I'm almost certain you can fix this.

I had an '03 Korean L2000. It was a very good bass. I live in the desert--7% humidity is not uncommon somedays--and the neck had trouble adjusting, having come from Pennsylvania. I was adjusting the truss rod often. That's the only issue I ever had with it. It played well and sounded great. And that neck issue might have been peculiar to that specific bass. I doubt every Korean Tribute is like that.

I'm looking at L1000 vs Kiloton.
What are the tonal and other differences between the two?

I like simple and the L2000 just has a lot going on so that concerns me , doesn't eliminate it though.

If the Fallout is really a mini L1000, I would get it in a second.
I have a US P, a MIM PJ with MFD P + DiMarzio, a Lakland Decade the rare active with series/parallel and a red Fallout tribute shorty.

All wear LaBella flats. All are ostensibly a variation on Precision basses, the Decade is a pbass on steroids according to Dan Lakin, and he's right.

The Fallout still gets practice and gig time, it has a richness to it's sound and smoothness with fingers or a pick. It just kicks ass, in short. If the L1000 was available to me, I would get it in a second and probably put flats on it too.

The MM position of the kilo does nothing for me, neither does a Stingray. L1K seems like it can happily live alongside a few Precisions if it truly is the big brother to the Fallout.

Thanks! I'll give these suggestions a try. I purchased them directly from G&L so I would hope they are, supposedly, the right size.

not exactly, but close.

it's the same position as the L-1000 (relative to the size of body, etc)

I think someone had a lineup with horizontal lines showing the pickup placements for the L-1000, L-2000 etc.
I don't have that, but I know I have seen it

You are going to love it. that extra sumthin sumthin from the short scale, fully passive L1k ish sound FAT.

I have a couple reverse taper 1Meg pots, and may build a PTB and add a knob...--- if i decide to do anything at all- I dig it as is.

I'm using rounds ATM:
D'addario steels (50-105) currently, GHS balanced Nickels on backorder.
I had a good "near flat" experience with GHS brite flats at one point in the past on my L2500, may go there first.
their 49-108 size might add MORE meat to the tone.
Dunlop flats have been good to me too.
Chromes and Labella are safe bets

** I WISH that EB would make cobalt rounds and flats in Short Scale.

I've been looking at labella. Do you think the standard, or medium gauge would work better?
