G&L Club Part 7

My tech has recovered from cv, so today I dropped off the SB-1.

I had a little list of things. Yes, he agreed, that rosewood is looking a bit thirsty.

"And could those knobs," I asked, "be a bit tighter?"

"I'd need to open it up.... which I'm going to have to do anyway, because there's there's a wire trapped under the pickguard. Look."

Got it home and was checking it out, and found that to (almost) intonate it I had the saddles almost falling off the front of the bridge! I could NOT get all the strings intonated properly. I wanted to change strings anyway, so I did and the situation didn't improve.

I did some web surfing for discussions of that bass model, and found a discussion of G&L JB tributes which mentioned that some of these basses from Indonesia came out with the wrong scale neck...21 frets instead of 20. Evidently it was a screw-up at the factory.

So I checked the neck, and sure enough, it had 21 frets.

Here's the good news - I called G&L, and the tech I spoke with said essentially "Yes, we know about that. What's your address?" He did ask for photos, too. And in about two weeks I had a brand new 20 fret neck in the mail, no charge. No need to return the original neck, either.

I drilled it for the body, switched the tuners and hardware over, and mounted it. Success! Now it intonates nicely . The neck is slender and easy to play. Now it's just as nice a bass as I hoped it would be.

Well done, G&L. Full marks for customer service!!

Those white MFD 4-string humbuckers are rare. About a year ago, I looked on the G&L store for a white MFD humbucker pickup for my Kiloton, but they didn't list one. I emailed Memo and asked him if they had such a thing, but didn't receive a reply. I just checked now, and they have it listed, but it's crossed through. I still wouldn't mind having one.

And if you look on the red one, it's got the alnico slugs, so even rarer.
The blue is the more traditional MFD.
