Replacement pickups are $99.95 each, you will need to replace both pickups. The switch is $19.95, then whatever the labor fee will be, if you have any questions email me back, all the best.

So you're trying to add the K-wiring to an EXISTING bass.
That's a different story.
There's schematics for modifying basses without it, and can be done far cheaper.
When they do it at the factory, they add an extra lead on the pickups, and it's a $59 charge.

I'm not one to defend G&L, as I've had my issues, but your statement that they're charging you $300 for K-wiring is ridiculous.

It's an aftermarket change, that they don't do.

My statement is what they told me. Don't quite understand why my statement is rediculus. It is for one of their basses, an L-2000, and obviously, since I told them I would like to add it, it is to an existing bass. They do do this change and would do this change or he could have told me they don't do the change. They replace both pickups ($200), add the switch ($20.00), and the rest would be labor (lucky if it's only $80.00). So I guess your point is that $300 is cheap and I shouldn't be complaining, or if I don't want to do it myself I shouldn't complain.

You're misunderstanding,
They wouldn't do the work.
They don't modify existing basses.

Yes, they sell they pickups, and the switch.
But you don't send it in, and they do it for you.
You'd need to find a local tech to do the work.


The reason I said your statement is ridiculous, is because you said they were charging you $300 for the K-wiring, which is available on the build to order basses at a $59 upcharge.

You did not state it was for an existing bass, which changes everything.
And, as I said, there's schematics for modifying your bass, without having to buy new pickups.

OMG mode is series mode, just with that capacitor on it which rolls off some highs. If you remove that cap, then it'll be straight series mode.

Give it a shot. You can always put the cap back. :)

I removed the cap on both my Wunkays, as I did not like OMG mode.
It's certainly thick and midrange-y.
Dialing the bass back a touch gives me a tone similar to Geezer Butler's on the early Sabbath albums. So yeah, P-ish.

Single coil with the treble backed off give me that brighter P-bass tone.

Between those two, I get close enough to a P.

All this talk of removing the OMG mode cap - how do I determine if my bass has OMG mode? I think my bass does - it definitely doesn't have single coil\K Mod as the middle position only has 2 positions.
I'm thinking my bass does have OMG as when engaged it seems to ditch a bunch of treble, boosts volume and is quite bassy.
Anyone spot it from any of these pics?

The OMG caps are the two green caps that are attached directly to the series/parallel switch. Basically dead center in your first photo. You would want to remove those from the circuit, but you don't want to remove the jumper that one of the legs creates between two poles on the switch.

Series mode without OMG is wonderful.
But OMG is even better! :bassist:
