Do G&L quarter sawn necks come in different widths? As an example, would an L-2000 with a quarter sawn neck have a different width than a JB with a quarter sawn neck?
Quartersawn necks would be available with any width that the non-quartersawn would be. Basically however you specify on the build. For the JB, my understanding is that they only have a 1.5" width available, but for the L-2000, they can be had with 1.75", 1.625" (default) or 1.5".
Thanks. Looking at an L-2000 with a quartersawn neck and the seller states it is a 1.5" neck, but doesn't have the build sheet. I've asked that it be checked, but haven't received a response yet. The fact that it is possible helps me out.
My memory is cloudy on the labels right now. If I remember correctly there was a Premium Edition released in 2000 when G&L first introduced the Tribute line (all tributes between 2000-2002 were MIJ).
There is also a Limited Edition that continued (maybe still is) to be made in Japan with the lettering stamped clearly across the headstock. These are not as rare.
The less common basses were made only between 2000-2002 before G&L decided to move production to Korea (then, later, Indonesia).
The early 2000-2002 Tribute basses are some of the best G&L basses I have ever played. I still have one El Tookay left and go back and forth on selling it. But every time I play it, damn, it just slays. The build quality is better than any of my vintage or my custom 2020 build. It's an absolute beast.
So, would this be one of those "not as rare" ones?

Wow this is a great looking bass for the price. I didn't know flamed maple tops was an option outside of the custom shop? also looks like the bridge was changed at some point

Yes. And that is not a 2000 as it was made in Korea. The early MIJ Tributes did not have a 6 bolt neck, either.
I love my recently acquired MIJ L2000 "Slim Neck" Tribute. Plenty of these along with a few "Premiums" still floating around on Yahoo Auctions in Japan or Digimart if you use a broker service.
Despite the uptick in shipping costs, it's still cheaper than buying anything locally here in Australia which is usually limited to Indonesian Tribute models if you can find one.

just and add, yes the tribute firstly making in japan as tribute, then they change to korea then indonesia. For domestic market they change tribute as premium line. Tribute has 4bolt but sometimes has 6 bolt i dont know when is the cut off production time. For block inlay, i have seen on domestic market place here some tribute has it but its very rare.
The differences for the mij are they have tap coil option located in between paralel and series switch. Tribute has thin neck version (jazz bass neck size)and ordinary version (p bass neck size. For premium has 40mm neck with and little bit chunkier than jazz bass.
My G&L in my profile is premium version btw. And i buy it here in japan for 450 bucks… which pretty good to compare with market price (500-650) and the sound off course very versatile and have addition of tap coil is very interesting for me that i can duplicate jb 70-ish sound version…finger cross hehehe…
Anyone have any experience with adding a separate battery compartment to their L-2000 or L-2500? I kinda wanna get this mod added so I don't need a screwdriver to replace the battery — especially during a gig. I already want to bring this bass to a local tech to get the single coil mod installed, so I figure I might as well get both mods done when I bring it in.

FWIW - flame maple and quilted maple tops used to be an option on regular USA builds (since long before the Custom Shop existed), but all top woods are now only available through the Custom Shop.
Grrrrr ... I'm looking online at a used L-2000 from a dealer. There are some inconsistencies with it ( the specs of the instrument per G&L's records don't match what the dealer shows and says). The serial number shown on the neck indicates it's a different finish on the bass. And the dealer isn't responding in a timely manner. Very frustrating.
The original owner of the bass, based on the serial number (he registered the bass with G&L and I was able to contact him) had a bass with the specs G&L has, as well as this Blue Burst bass I'm looking at. He registered the serial number of the bass as it is shown in the pics (Blue Burst, not Honey Burst). All I'm trying to find out is whether or not it has a 1.5" width neck or a 1 5/8".
I have G.A.S. and am willing to spend some good money on this bass if it is the specs I want. Just wish the dealer would answer my questions. Have sent e-mails and called.
