G&L Club Part 7

Yep, my 84-85 Lynx is Bahama Blue, not to be confused with the early Viking Blue or the later metallic Cobalt Blue (sadly discontinued years ago). All three of them are uncommon, with Cobalt being the best looking (IMHO). Strange that there aren't more Cobalts floating around in the wild. I suspect that dealers mostly stayed away from the lesser known finishes when stocking their inventories, just to be sure nothing went unsold for too long. Just a theory, but the G&L finish menu was so big I doubt many buyers were even aware of all the possible choices.

I'd like to know the official G&L name for this late 80's non-metallic yellow El Toro. It's the only G&L bass I've ever seen like it. There were only so many Toro's ever built, there can't be many yellow ones in existence. Sometimes I wonder if it's a 1-off factory finish. Anyone have a brochure from the eighties? Curious minds...

I have one. Not near it right now, but can share a photo later. If memory serves brochure says it was offered in a few colors with custom finishes available on request.

Cool, thanks.

I seem to recall an obscure G&L finish called "Lemon" something thing or other, but I think it may have been a metallic finish. I should ping bdgotoh, he may recall some of the oddball paint jobs that came and went over the years at G&L.

I don't remember the color name, but it was much more common on guitars. Quite a few Rampages were built in that yellow.

After an almighty effort, Chromes didn't quite persuade me that they should be the String Of Choice on my SB-1. I loved their feel and they're nicely alert in their responsiveness, a big thing for me. But for what I play on that bass, the wooliness of the G string sticks out / underwhelms / disrupts the flow. Also, I noticed that as the strings began to break in, I was leaving the volume on 10 more and more.

I took that one string off and replaced it with a half-used Roto Bass, and immediately felt that final degree of satisfaction that told me its time to stop experimenting with different strings on this bass, time to settle down happily with the Roto Bass

(Tho occasionally giving myself permission to have a month of extra excitement with a set of Swing Bass :bassist:)

Which sends me back to the question: where am I going to find a home for these Chromes? I don't want to live without them....

I've been thinking more since posting that. Since the nature of the flats, once they've started to mellow, gets me wanting to park the volume on 10, to get some flexibility back, I'd want a some kind of bridge pickup ie I'd want an SB-2 instead.

But I think I preferred the sound of the Chromes even more on the LB-100, before I changed the pickup. I've already realised that with alnico I want flats — perhaps I should obversely conclude that with flats I want alnico? So perhaps a nice lightweight PJ with a SPB-1 and an Area J would make me happy? Or a pair of Area Js forced onto an unsuspecting P-bass.... Anyway, these thoughts take me away from this thread :speechless:

As for the problematic stiffness of the Chromes — I put together a 45-105 set, which played very similarly to the 50-110 Roto Bass and the 49-109 LaBellas :D Lovely ;)

I'm trying to put together a parts L-1005.
I have a MFD 5er from a Kiloton, I will try to source a L2500 neck and am thinking what to do about the body.
I thought to get a precision bass, modify the neck pocket, route a pickup cavity and get a pickguard blank and cut it to shape.
If someone is selling a saddle lock 5 bridge that could be cool, if not, I'll get a Fender or other Himass bridge.

Any notable issues with this plan that I'm missing?

I'd be curious where or if you can get the neck, let us know. I hardly see used or new necks for G&Ls, only rarely for sale used. Sounds like a cool idea good luck !

Got the neck right here on the classfieds.
Now the question becomes going one of two routes:
1. Modding a P bass body to fit the neck and pickup.
2. Getting a B stock L2500 body for 65$ from G&L, and if the neck position is the same as the L1005, plug the bridge pup, and refinish the body. Plus source a G&L saddlelock 5 bridge (haven't seen any for sale)
