Well, either the threads are completely stripped or the rod is snapped. Truss rod replacement is such major surgery that a replacement neck is usually a more cost effective option. I'd pay the bench fee to have a good tech take a look, but if it plays, play it. That's a beautiful L2K.

Thanks,for the comment,LowEZ, I talked to the G&L technician about this,and he referred me to one of the repair techs,at G&L. Got his voice mail,and left a message. I give G&L credit they did return my call me,and discussed the neck with me. Haven't talked to the repair tech,yet.

Just posted this in the "vintage g&l club" also but this club looks a bit more active.

So this might be the place for some help. I own a well worn 1981 l2000 and have a couple questions. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Does the treble knob only work on the neck pickup, all modes? Is the single coil bass boost (switch toward the neck) louder then the humbucker mode(switch toward the bridge)? Does anyone get a loud feedback type squeal in the active treble boost in certain amps or when running overdrive pedaled?

ampegfuzz,thought this might help you on the controls. This is a picture,of the controls on my 2005,L2000,that came with all the case candy's.

From e-bay, a 2010 Tribute SB-2. Was anyone else bidding on this? It really is in beautiful shape, I can't find a scratch or ding on it other than the pickguard. Weighing in at about 8.5 lbs, I was hoping it would balance just a bit better (while seated). Maybe I will replace the tuners, I am guessing the G&L ultralites are direct replacements without drilling? I really like the metallic paint, awesome!

Update on my L2000,after taking the strings off,and bending the neck,in the opposite directions of the string pull(forwards,on the neck),tried a different allen wrench in the truss rod nut(3mm),and it fit down in the neck further,than the allen wrench that came with the bass? So after letting it set a couple of days without the strings,the truss rod now turns without any resistance. I think my problem with the truss rod has been take care of. :hyper:

Feeling better about the L2000,after removing the rounded out truss rod nut. After some discussions,on bassesbyLeo talk forum,about truss rod issues. I finally removed the rounded out truss rod nut,and ordered the correct allen 1/8" tool,from Stew/Mac,and new nut. Replaced the new truss rod nut,and took it to a local luthier,and now the truss rod,is now adjustable,and turning hardly with any resistance. This L2000,is a great bass guitar,and if I decide to ever sell this bass,it will not be devalued,just because someone didn't pursue putting a new truss rod nut,on. The neck is fully adjustable,and the truss rod is turning,the truss rod is not damaged,or snapped. Just justifying the condition of this L2000.

Weird thing. Was into a pawn shop the other day and saw my old natural finish Tribby L2K, the bass that got me hooked on G&L basses. It was a lovely thing that made me happy playing at gigs, especially blues shows. I sold it to one of my usual suspects when I got my US L2K. Yet there it was zip-tied to a hook and sporting a quarter inch of dust. I recognized it because I'd spot-filled a couple of dings. I've been inexplicably saddened since seeing it there, like having visited my kid in jail. Well, admittedly I haven't been saddened enough to pay what I sold it for to get it bailed out. Still, a week later it's haunting me. Nuts.

I ended up selling my Empress/Maple. This is more like it. I missed the Alder/Rosewood tone and having a heavier bass just feels better to me and at 9.5lbs this is the heaviest LB-100 I've ever had.

Going strictly from memory, the s/c with bass boost mode was toggle toward the bridge on mine.

The tone control should function for both pickups, regardless of pickup selector switch position. You might want to check your wiring, it may have been altered?

The output signal from these early 2K's is so strong that it can easily cause squealing noises and light up your clipping indicator. Maybe try plugging into the active input on your amp, or turning down the gain at the amp or the bass itself. You can also use the gain control on an OD pedal.

Also, your wiring scheme and preamp version are not the same as later arrangements. For an original wiring diagram that pertains to your '81, maybe look on guitarsbyleo site. The hardcore G&L experts hang out there. Good luck.

Btw, nice looking bass there!
