Kiloton Tribute fretless string question...

Trib Fretless owners, what is your current string set? If you are using rounds, for how long and do you see any wear on the fretboard?

I am trying different flats on my Kiloton, such as Chromes, EB Cobalt Flats and Labellas (current), however I still don't like the results. Tried Labellas Tapewound Black nylon as well, similar results to flats.

Not sure if I am spoiled by the SB-2 punch or the L2K versatility, but I am finding the Kilo lacking on low-end department; it's sounds dry; it is missing that deep low end and some mid-bass no matter what amplification source I use.

I play mostly single-coil with tone open at 50/75%, and I understand the pickup location very close to the bridge has to do with that, but It just feels like something is missing on the low-end side. Off course, it gets better if I play off the pickup, closer to the neck in the "P" pickup area, but still not deep enough.

I wanted to try rounds, but I am not sure how good the fretboard will hold. I also have a set of Elixirs but not sure if it will be much different than the Labella Nylons.

NBD: 1984 L1K. Wish I could say I picked it up for a song, but it is what it is. Excellent condition and sounds awesome.

No position markers on a bound ebony board. Hand cut GT Tusq nut.
@smeet's example has Kmod (SCM and 4 coil parallel in the middle position)
The pickup height change should assist in your quest for more topend

Love their blackburst finish! They do it better than anyone else.

That is the one pup near bridge syndrome. Similar to the L2k in bridge only. The captured area of string vibrations have less amplitude. If you lower the pickup away from the strings, you will diminish top end and signal. providing the effect of more bass,

I will try lowering the pickup before changing strings again. I might need to find a scooped string set to go with it.

Chromes are considered a brighter flat-wound, and I found Tapewounds to have brightness, too. For the other extreme, check out GHS Precision Flats. I like them for darker "thumpyness" especially played finger style up by the neck (and muted).

Based on previous feedbacks from people who bought B-Stock Fallouts from G&L, their scale was way off.A Fallout advertised @ 7.5lbs was more like 9.5lbs so take that weight info with a grain of salt.

Another thing I noticed is that it looks like none of the Fullerton B-Stock basses are shipping with the Tolex case.

I bought a B-stock JB-2 and am really happy with it so far. No weight was listed, so I was a little nervous, but it turned out great. Bass is light and plays great. I've wanted a P bass with Jazz pickups and now I finally have it.

I've read that G&L is no longer offering the Tolex cases with their USA instruments, I think it's extra $$ now and they ship with a gig bag. Not sure if Tributes even get a gig bag ?

BTO and Custom Shop come with HSC. Fullerton Deluxe models come with gig bag. Tributes come with nothing. This is according to the G&L website.

Pretty sure RocketMusic said HSC was a $100 option now on BTO. Given the quality of G&L cases, save the $100 and go buy a better fitting case. I only have one G&L G&G case that I actually use (with several empty in my attic) and it is a more form fitting Custom Creations one. SKB and Gator both make cases that fit G&Ls better than the G&L G&G does.

I rarely use series mode at all. It's just to thick for me.

My favorite by far is single coil mode. Really nice mid boost. Very clear and cuts well through the mix.

Parallel is a bit of mid cut. Flip on treble boost and to me it's nice for slap.

But which mode you like probably depends a lot on what music you're playing.

I've had my L2500 for a couple of months now, and I love it. Except that I wish it had more high end. Then I realized I had just assumed that series mode was the natural voice of the instrument. Turns out I like single coil and parallel just as much, and they sound great, just require some different control settings, etc.

Am I the only one who forgot about those modes? What settings do most of you use on your L2x00 basses? What types of music do you play them in? And have you noticed that they don't respond to eq in the same way Fender-type basses do?

Am I in the Matrix? Am I insane? What is this water coming from my eyes? Is this how it feels to be human?

I use my l2500 in series all the time, I just couldn't get on with parallel, I even did the single coil mod which I thought sounded great until I played live with it, no matter what I try setting wise I always end up back in series mode with both pickups on

I've had an l2500 for about twelve years now, I haven't played anything else in that time, except one gig with a stingray which I returned to the shop the following day. I've always wanted to try a precision type bass and so bought myself an LB-100 a couple of months ago, I'm sure it's a fantastic bass but I just can't get on with the sound, I've played it a one and a half gigs but last night I was so underwhelmed I rushed home in the break and grabbed my 2.5k, it sounded so much better and I felt much more comfortable playing it. Looks like the LB is going to be an expensive ornament.

When my LB-100 arrived, it had the stock alnico pickup and nickel-plated rounds. I too found it underwhelming. I've now got a Dimarzio pickup in there, with steel rounds. But before I took the alnico pickup out, I quickly tried stringing it with flats. That also gave the bass a lot more character, stopped it from seeming underwhelming.

In your shoes — so used to the MFD humbuckers in your L-2500 — putting an MFD split into the LB-100 would probably be the obvious thing to try. But fitting some flats would be an easier experiment....

Yeah, a SB-1 split MFD would make that LB-100 keep up with that L-2500.
