Were there other color ones available then, too? It would be interesting to know about the obscure G&L finishes that have come and gone over the years, and thier official names.

Not sure but I think G&L's "Yellow Fever" may be a reissue of a prior yellow finish from the 80's. There's a yellow 80's El Toro in my closet that looks suspiciously like the current Yellow Fever. :eyebrow:

I have a bunch of old G&L brochures/price lists. I have seen the Gold Metallicburst in there, but never seen any others. They offered Gold Metallicburst when they were doing the swirl finishes.

Back around 2003-4 there were two NOS '87 Interceptors listed on ebay by Flynn Brothers Music in Chicago. Both had two-tone finishes. If memory serves, one was black/cream, the other was a sort of Burgundy Mist/gold-ish affair. Flynn's said they had bought out a small music store. Among the inventory were the two brand new NOS '87 Interceptors, with their tolexes. Listed on ebay at $800 each. My gut was telling me to buy one (or both). I watched the listings daily, almost pulled the trigger on the black/white one a couple times. That one was just too damn cool, but money was kinda tight, so....sigh.

See, now this is what fascinates me. I know for sure there were odd finishes on G&L's menu over the years, some only offered for brief periods, that we never see. Maybe because few (if any) dealers would order them on spec. And maybe 'cos few buyers even knew they existed.

That blue '84 Toro is....Viking Blue?

Interesting (slightly off topic). I saw a report from NAMM that EBMM Sterling by Musicman was offering a 'new' Sterling Bass for $799. This has a passive single humbucker. When I was looking for new basses in the $500-$800 range back in the Fall through Mid December this wasn't available. I got a Tribute Series Kiloton which I really like. The Sterling by Musicman basses I looked at (other than an inexpensive one) all had 1-5/8" neck widths (at the nut). I like a 1-1/2 width - so didn't consider the SBMM offerings.

Posting here I'm wondering if folks think that the SBMM Single Passive Humbucker bass (at $799) is worth $150 more than the G&L Kiloton (at $649). I don't see the extra value in the SBMM - but I'm a relative newbie and wondered what others think..

If you are referring to the Sterling SB14...
Ash body is nice on it. Other than that the only way I could see buying it over a Kiloton is if you are after the Joe Dart-esque look.

Tribute Kiloton wins for me on
- MFD Pickup
- Additional tonal flexibility (coil tap switch)
- Appearance (I really do not like the look of the SB14 at all)

Noting that you asked this question in a G&L club so I doubt you get many who prefer the SB14.

Probably same as my 84 SB2, which isn't faded but definitely checked.

Yes, the SB14 is the bass. I posted here because I bought a Kiloton - but I see your point about preferences. I should probably post the same question in a SBMM forum and see the difference. Don't want to go over there and cause trouble though.

Have to word the post in a non-confrontational way..

not to throw another wrench into your thought process, but if I was after a MM style bass, I'd take a serious look at the Sire Z series they just announced at NAMM. Based on other Sire basses I have owned, I'm thinking they will be just as well put together and playable as the SBMM, if not moreso due to better components/electronics and attention to detail (rolled fret edges, for example). YMMV, natch.

Hard to argue with the price on them if they end up being any good (probably will). Currently seeing $450 for the 4 string MM setup one.

No wrenches in there. I tried 10-12 different basses in the $400-$1200 range and I liked the Tribute Kiloton the best. A lot of them had things I liked - but the Kiloton just felt good to me!

Basses seem like software and electronics- in the sense that if you wait for something better/newer that's just around the corner you'll never buy anything. That's my beginner's view.

Same... other than I also liked Peavey Holoflake finishes on the G Bass and GV. Andromeda is pretty much exactly Peavey Holoflake Black.
