G&L Club Part 7

You're right there. A right angle plug is more of a suggestion to try in the future. I'm casting my vote for a new pickguard. The store at glguitars.com might be a source. I got one made for my SB-2 by Pickguard Planet (also called Pickguard Heaven). I have no affiliation with them, but they do excellent work
Any idea which of the years offered would fit a 2022 SB-2?
Living in Australia I am reluctant to send my existing guard off as a template.

With Pickguard Heaven, you probably need the 2018 listing. G&L changed to in house made guards in 2016. I also see Precision Guitar on Reverb advertising 2016+ for their SB2 guards.

I'm not sure how you guys are adjusting your truss rods, but I learned a long time ago to apply force to the neck externally, then adjust the rod. Don't use the rod to force the neck to move under full string tension. That doesn't mean you'll never have a problem, but using the truss rod to move the neck under tension is risky business. Some manufacturers recommend you loosen the strings; I don't go that far, but I do bend the neck in the direction that I want the neck to move before I apply any force to the nut or rod. That has served me well.
I hear ya, and it sounds like you have a good method there. I do loosen the strings on mine just as sort of a better safe than sorry thing but I agree with everything you said.

Is this how you talk to people in your everyday life?
I reported my experiences of a company currently going through a phase of treating its customers poorly, and passed on the report of someone in a similar position. Someone here said the fault would be with the customers, and dismissed the possibilty of the fault lying with the factory. They then admitted that they know nothing of what the current output of the G&L factory is, and were presenting their abrasive opinion from a position of ignorance.

To answer your question, when I get accused of things that aren't my fault, my response is the same offline as it is online. I have some qualities, but saintliness is not one of them.

For what it's worth, I won't recommend that no one should never shop with G&L, but I would recommend that they first check that they've the patience to return an instrument over and over again, if that proves necessary. If like me, they've only got the patience to go six months without the bass they've paid serious money for once, then perhaps they should look elsewhere. I should have, clearly.

Should anyone care, the neck on the SB-1 with the terrible trussrod appears to be coping with the task of wearing the 35-95 set of Roto Bass rounds (total tension: 127 lbs 🥳) and I'm getting used to the feel. I will definitely be reversing the split pickup, though: not even an MFD pickup can paper over the weediness of a 0.035 G string with the traditional layout. Hopefully reversing it will make a meaningful difference. Certainly cheaper than shipping the bass back to USA again, and a lot more fun then interacting with this awful company.

Yea, I would be extremely frustrated as well, but I’d be interested in hearing the bass with the new pickup and the 35 rounds!

Sorry to hear about your awful experience with G&L. Does the pickup route allow easy reversal?

I've had my Tribby SB-2 for a few weeks now, and it's been interesting. I originally had round wound strings on it, and they just sounded too bright and twangy. I put flats on it and that tamed it nicely. I just ordered some Hipshot tuners for it, I'm looking forward to installing those. I have some on another bass and I like them a lot. It's a heck of a bass, I love the sound of it. Even with the flats it's really powerful. Gotta love those MFDs.

I used to own a US SB-2 (1999). Strung with light gauge Chromes. I have been hoping for years they make a 5-string version…🥵

Arrived yesterday in much better condition than expected. April/May 1989 (pulled the neck). The black wrinkle hardware makes the red pop.

She's a keepe

Who’s demanding anything? …not me. I bought a 1980 L1000 - I thought the controls were perfect :). I think the new CLF’s are back to that original scheme. What I liked in the original 1 and 2000 series were the transparent green, red and blue finishes. …now that would be cool! …and what’s this fourth switch, eh?

I was the one making demands. I really want the black wrinkle again.

First photos of L2000 had different pickup placement and a 4th switch. I am assuming it is a phase switch since the Musicman Sabre basses had one.

Cool! I was too busy gigging back then to notice. Now I too am wondering… Thx!
