Spent some quality time with my CLF L-1000 last night. That bass continues to impress me. The L-1000 is my favorite one-pickup instrument. It is amazingly versatile.

Proof that the club has magical powers. I posted yesterday that I've been waiting a while for my SB-2 to be repaired by G&L. Today I get an email from Memo that it's ready! He even attached a pic.

Sorry folks, this is anti-climactic. My new SB is exactly like one I already have! I know it's lame, but this is an opportunity to tell you a little bit about me. I think the 80s SB-1 is the greatest bass of all time. It's also insanely underrated. Which is fine because I will buy them if necessary.

I think it's the one in the middle. From 87-89 ish. The neck is just a little bit smoother than the one I already had and it weighs less. The levitating SB-2 is moving on.

Have you ever compared these with original versions of the sb-1? I have never had a chance, but I will add that my '24 sb-1 is outstanding! The sb series are just great basses.

I've never actually seen the single coil SB-1, but I imagine the neck pick up on the first gen two is pretty much the same thing. It's pretty honky.

Someone once said that I was uniquely unlucky in having G&L replace one maxed-out truss rod with another. Someone just posted this, not on TB:

"... discovered in August that the truss rod on my year-old USA L-2000 didn't work ... waited 4 months for a new one to arrive, it also had a non-functioning truss rod, and a huge bow ..."

I rather like that this means that the 1st Gen SB-2 has outcompeted the 2nd Gen SB-2 in your affections.

Would love to hear a 1st Gen SB-2 modded to be two Vols, the bridge on full and the neck just slightly backed off, to fill in the scoop. I'm imagining something similar to a door being kicked off its hinges

Maybe they're doing something wrong? Adjusting truss rods isn't that difficult, but more often than not, they don't break themselves.

If your love of your G&L requires you to believe that G&L are uniquely misfortunate in attracting clumsy and ignorant bassists, go for it

For the record, my first neck spent a year bending itself forward thanks to a non-functioning truss rod, my second neck arrived with a maxed-out truss rod that was already bending under the pressure of the strings fitted by the factory. No need for an owner to break something when it's a pile of junk from the moment of its birth.

(P.S. the proof that it is the unreliable truss rod design not me it that the identical neck on my other G&L works perfectly, sustaining a very comfortable low action despite wearing a heavy-ish 45-105 set of Chromes flats for two years)

I saw this CLF L-1000 series 750 with a white pickup cover on reverb. This cover looks great and I REALLY want to get my hands on one for my L1k 750.

I asked the seller but, unfortunately, they were selling on consignment and weren't sure where it originated. G&L told me they only sell black covers.

Does anyone know where one of these may have come or where one could get one made?

I do love my G&Ls, all of which are 20-38yrs old. But I've owned dozens of basses, and currently have more than a dozen and I've encountered very very few truss rod problems in the nearly 40 years that I've been playing. I know it happens, but it's rare given the literally millions of truss rods made.

I know it is not a G&L. Though I am starting to think a matching Fallout would be pretty cool.

G&L sold L Series pickups with white covers on their webstore at one point. They are definitely out there. Cannot comment on how/if you can get new ones though.

I haven't checked lately, but gl had the white cover pickups listed on the website the last few years. It always says "not available, not in stock", etc.
My understanding is the covers are integrated with the pickup, but I might have that wrong.
I wanted to buy a white cover MFD for my L1k, both for the look, and to try the mfd instead of the factory alnico humbucker my bass came with. I also wouldn't mind just getting the white cover for my current pickup,, if they are detachable from the pickup.
Edit: that looks great! Is that Belair Green? (Mine is…I'd have to find some white knobs to complete the look.

3D Printing?
Google for: "bass guitar pickup cover 3d printing". You can get measurements from a black one...
Or some kid in your neighborhood may do it for you

My local Office Depot makes 3D printing at short notice or even self serve off a USB stick (or an emailed file).
