I went in there once, too, while I was visiting my parents. Great shop. The Matador they've got posted in Andromeda is breathtaking.

I'm "Canada close" to Millbury, but not "Massachusetts close;" not close enough to easily go check out a bass, sadly.

Every time I've bought from a distant GC I've had excellent luck calling the actual store. Once you get ahold of an employee there, they've always been happy to go straight over to the wall, take down the instrument, and give me an honest assessment. I've done this about five times at widely distant GCs and I've always had good luck.

They want to make the sale, but they also know the return policy makes it easy for you to reject it once you get it in hand. I suspect they'd rather be honest about it than go through the hassle of boxing and shipping it. It's almost better to talk to one of the worker bees, instead of a manager.

Specialty Traders is a good company and a (former) G&L dealer. I bought a Tribute M-2000 from them about seven years ago, and they were very helpful. A couple years ago, G&L put their ultra-lite tuners on sale for $12.00 each, and I bought eight of them. I put one set of four on an inexpensive Squier Paranormal 54 Jazz Bass--the cheap Chinese tuners needed replacing for sure. The other set is sitting in a box on my workbench because I don't know what to put it on. I have a Tribute Kiloton and a Tribute JB-2 that I could put them on, but I'm having neither tuner nor neck-dive issues with them, so I'm in no hurry to decide. But considering the current status of G&L (or lack thereof), mine are not for sale. They'll be put to use. It should be mentioned that these are not a drop-in fit for any bass except a USA G&L as far as I know. The mounting screws don't line up with anything I've ever tried them on, including the Tributes. However, with a little bit of work, they can be installed. I've used them on Tributes, Squiers, and even reversed two of them and put them on an Epiphone Jack Casady signature bass.

As recently discussed in another thread here on TB, those tuners, that were available from the G&L on-line store until some time back, are not what they used to be. Since ca. 2015, G&L have (had? :roflmao: ) sourced them from overseas (Asia?), they are not the same quality as before when they were made by Schaller in Germany or manufacturers in the USA. This is easily seen with the details and accuracy of the thread on the tuner key shaft. My 2017 Kiloton-5 has them and I can compare those with the wonderful tuners on my 1997 L-2500 Custom, that were the old model.
Just saying, the G&L bass tuners are compatible with most EBMM basses, namely Stingrays.

The newer G&L Ultralite tuners have a bad reputation, but I only had a problem with one of them, a loose paddle on my 2018 Kiloton. Memo sent me a whole new set. That was about three years ago, and I've had no trouble with them. My understanding is that they are made by Ping, the same Ping that makes golf clubs, according to Memo at G&L. Ping golf clubs are manufactured at the company's facility in Phoenix from parts sourced worldwide. In particular, the shafts for their clubs are machined in Phoenix, which makes me assume that the ultralite bass tuners are also manufactured there, but I could be wrong. Does anybody have any specific information on where and by whom they might be made overseas? I guess it doesn't matter these days as we'll probably never see them again, but my curiosity is clamoring for attention. :hyper:

They're made by Reliance in Taiwan (makers of Ping).
I upgraded my G&L tuners by replacing the paddles with Schaller BM paddles. I'll post my results when I do all 4 tuners.

I'll see what I can find out on the gold one. I know he told me the green one weighed around 9 pounds and had "one of the nicest necks" he ever had.

rambling on, glad to be off today

I only remember playing a lightweight JB5 at G&L and a super light L1000 750 at the Bass Exchange, and I've played a lot of them

just noticed the allen wrench that came with my new L2000 is bent, wonder if I did that or not?
I must get pretty irritated when the relief isn't where I like it

got a nice Black Friday surprise today when i dug out my girlfriend's old ESP M-IV out, not only is it passive, it has an almost identical neck to my L2000 and LB100

I really do like my JB, but I noticed that it seems kinda cramped on the fretboard now that i'm playing the 1.625" basses more and more

I suppose, then, that the Ping that makes golf clubs and the Ping that make the G&L tuners are two different companies because the internet says that Ping Golf is owned by the Solheim family and makes their clubs in Phoenix from materials sourced in the US, Europe, and Asia. I either misunderstood Memo or he misunderstood my question. Sorry about that! I should've never believed the internet.

So here's what I got:

"Both necks j's. Gold is lighter than the green. Not by much. Green one sounds and plays amazing. Gold one plays great. Green one better in my opinion"

I couldn't care less where the new ones are made. Have had quite a few post-2015 G&L basses, and even more of the pre-Ping ones. Only prob has been a couple loose paddles on the older ones. Zero issues with the newer Pings. In fact, I prefer the new ones over older because they turn effortlessly, have no slop or lash whatsoever. They feel a lot like Gotoh Res-o-lites on some of my other basses, to me. Can't ask for better than that IMO.

When I realized the Pings are a direct drop-in for the heavier Hipshot "Kluson clones" on my D. Lakin basses, I bought five sets off the G&L store on sale for $48 per set of 4. What an improvement...saved a buncha headstock weight, silky smooth and accurate now. I don't see myself wearing out a set of Pings in this life, despite what feels like thinner gauge paddles than before, nor the difference in shaft gearing. ("a distinction without a meaningful difference", anyone?):meh:

I tried to reach the store, but the phone number listed just brings me to the Guitar Center headquarters in Kansas City. So they tried to send me to the Millbury one, no one picks up...I guess I will try tomorrow.

I understand that "Hipshot" makes machines that fit most G&Ls. At least the L and the M series. I have 4 G&Ls personally. 2 USA M-2500s. 1 USA L-2500 and a tribute M-2500. Liking them more every day. Sad about G&L. I feel fortunate to have scored that I have before the end. I hear FMIC has officially taken what remains. I would hope something comes of it.

I have two, four string sets and a five string set of the Pings that are used on the US basses. I had them on G&Ls that I sold and put the original heavier tuners back on at that time. None of them were gigged so they're like new and include ferrules and screws. I'll get some pics and put them on the Accessories forum. They'll be less expensive than Specialty Traders and paying tax.
