G&L Club Part 7

My L1505 is currently running DR Flatwound Legends. I dont know what strings were on it when I got it, (I bought it used off the TB classifieds); I wasnt familiar with them - they had red silks and were round wound. I was not digging the tone and they were tough on the fingers. I was glad to see them go.

I'm pretty happy with the bass now, but somehow I have the 'itch'..... I may have to sell a guitar to make room !

BTW - I also found that the G&L bass was more critical of amp settings, and much of it may be me learning the new instrument.

Take a L1000, add a bridge pickup and a preamp, and you've got a L2000. Select the L2000's neck pickup, put it in passive mode, and you've got yourself a L1000.

The 1000 comes stock with "bass boost mode" instead of series, but that's a just minor wiring difference. I gave bass boost mode a try in my L2500, and found it pretty useless. I don't think many people have sat around thinking "Man, my L series just doesn't have enough bass!".

A L1000 might be your thing if you want something simple. Or at least more simple than the L2000. :)

Funny post. :)

Series/parallel switching... Well perhaps I haven't found a way to use it, but my tone goes from thin to huge with the toggle of a switch. Not sure why the boost is there, really.

I am very partial to my G&Ls though and think that the G&L pups, prob an SB-1 if they put it in have the edge on the Seymour Duncan in the dUgbass.

Ideally a #7 or #5 neck maybe #12, as I just prefer them a little thicker. I have read the Schecter is on the thin jazz side of things, which I don't mind, but prefer thicker.
Plus, headstock, colour options etc. And it would be a G&L!

They can call it a cUz bass if they want in exchange for one!

I totally get that. These days I greatly prefer G&L over anything else out there, regardless of price. That said, I was only suggesting the schecter as an alternative, more so considering that G&L sells the SB-1 pickup on their website.

Pretty much nailed it here. Both my '81 and '14 wunkays had the BB mode, which is just a capacitor wired across the switch. IIRC, the capacitor is wired across one of the coils in series mode and shunts one of the coils. Remove the capacitor and you have your standard series mode. I did this to both my wunkays as I too found that setting useless. I much prefer the tone in series.

On my L1500 I have a more love hate relationship and compared to my ASAT it would always be the one I would move if I traded, but then something happens and I like it again.
When I got it it had Ernie Ball hybrids and they were too bright and harsh for me, treble boost with them was like fingers on a blackboard. Changed strings to GHS boomers which are on my others and instantly more happy, and will probably get happier as they wear in.
Also it really loves certain pedals way more I have and gives a little extra compared to the ASAT, but I love the thickness of the ASAT.
Ideal alternative would be 1 of every G&Ls line up, only then can you decide...

There are no stocking brick & morter G&L dealers around here within the circles I travel in - so I bought mine from TB classifieds on a lark. I figure it had already depreciated so if I didnt like it I could resell it.

I had played a few used G&L basses at various shops around the country (i travel for work & will hunt down music shops in my downtime) but never pull the trigger on one.

Thats about what I was thinking. I'm not at all unhapply with my L1505 - on the contrary its rapidly becoming my go-to bass. Agreed - I cant imagine anyone saying it doesent have enough bottom end.

Just thought I'd let you know that Robbie's Music is a G&L distributor. I just bought a G&L L-2000 from the one on Rt. 46 in Wayne.
Brand new...$650!

No, the "K wiring" is a separate thing-- it splits the coils on the humbuckers so you then have the additional option of single-coils vs humbuckers.

However, it is located on the middle switch that also controls the series/parallel function-- the coil-split function adds a third position to the switch, which is the middle position.

If a person's L2k is delivered without the attached diagram, those switches can be confusing; heck I even forget what a few of the options are when I've been away from the bass for a while ;) The image does not show the optional "K" wiring, but again, it replaces the two position middle switch for a three position.

G&L 2000 usually play passive /series/ both pickups, just wondering if anyone here covers Superstition and if you have a "go to" setting for the moog sound .
Trying to stay out of the way of the clavinet since the band has an awesome keyboard player.

Well ill have to do that mod on my L2500. I think G&L sells the switch on their website.

My L2KE is staying exactly the way it is. There is something different to it that's just awesome.
I don't know if it's the earlier preamp, early pups or combination of the two, but it just
Kills! I have a replacement bass pot for it because mine only works at the very end of the travel and I havent changed it because I don't want to risk changing whatever is going on in it!

I do have an L2000 and we do cover Superstition. However, being a trio, we decided to throw a bass riff intro in the likes of SRV/Jeff Beck with an envelope filter effect. However, I think that these tunes call for a passive/series/bridge pu setting.
