So, I thought I'd ask this here before I go and return the bass later this week...
I bought a 2nd hand L2500 Tribute from GC's guitar section, and I think I got a dud. It sounds... very weak. I have a Sire V3 and a Kramer Forum that kick it's ass in terms of aggression. It sounds low output, muddy, and there isn't much midrange growl like I was expecting. I've seen people call these things fire-breathing monsters, and all I got is a Ford Pinto.Also I suspect there's something wrong with the electronics because the preamp modes don't work for jack. It originally had an old battery that expired 3 years ago, and when I activated the preamp modes it sounded like someone cranked up a fuzz pedal. Passive mode sounded "fine". After changing the battery for a new one, the preamp modes were dead. Almost no output whatsoever.
At this rate, I'm assuming GC sent me a lemon, and I should return it when I take my next trip there.
Is yours a Korean one with a “Tribute” on the bridge? Fuzzy and weak output could be a bad pot. They came with Mighty Mite pots which are cheap to replace via the G&L online store or any other supplier.
Could you guys point me to a G&L book or post that has details on current and past models?

Is there a quick way to describe the tone of the Kilotron vs. ASAT vs. L2000 vs LB100?
Looking for 1 5/8" nut, light weight, and a big meaty sound; I've been happy with passive basses nut do have a Spector and a Stingray (1983, last year of Leo). Not sure if one could order different width necks for any model.
Just hate to ask question that have been answered before, but:

The L2000/ASAT can be active and it is very flexible, i.e. It can mimic multiple sounds very well.
I've read it, and while it's a great book going into G&L history, it might not have the degree of technical specs you are looking for. Posting this in case anyone else has missed out on this great book. Apologies if it's been linked before in this megathread.

Been browsing through TB again for the first time in a few years and figured what better to jump in than share the best bass I've ever owned: my Detroit Muscle Series LB-100 w/ a few cosmetic mods!
Had the guys over at pickguard heaven whip up a white 3ply replacement guard and tossed on some of the CLF research knobs - really diggin' the more vintage vibe the new PG and knobs give the bass. Currently strung up with D'Addario Half Rounds (110-55), which took the tone to another level.
Gone through a '06 EBMM Sterling, a 2015 StingRay Classic, 1st gen German Warwick $$, '04 passive German Corvette, and a Japanese Geddy Lee JB - this is far and away the nicest bass I've had the pleasure of playing.
Anyways, I'm totally hooked on G&L now - love checking out the basses y'all post here. Serious case of GAS for a JB-4 & SB-2! Hope I did this right

So Jim,
The Blue G&L book authored by George Fullerton and co author (I don know his name) is a great resource for many things G&L.
There are a plethera of items in there one would not know otherwise. That being said there is a stopping off point a number of years ago so some of the information is out of date now as added to modern model changes/additions. For instance in the Blue book it states the LB-100 was discontinued as it wasnt a popular model. Said LB-100 was reissued a number of years ago and is very popular as I have one that will be buried with me.
As to tonal comparisons I have not played the Kiloton so I can only make an educated guess. I have owned a Legacy Strat, ASAT tele guitar, 90'S L2000, and currently own an Empress LB-100 and Empress L1500. I can honestly compare some of those tones, the two I'm closest to are the two I currently posses.
G&L Empress LB-100 vintage white:
Imasgine taking a production Fender P Bass throwing it in the dumpster and having someone build a really nice one (sorry P Bass lovers). The LB-100 Has this particular sonic foot print that can best be described as wide. fat, and round yet it retains clarity. Just an all around good vintage tone to be had here.
G&L L1500 color see through blue:
Can you say spank the plank? This thing has razor sharp precision solid spanky tone that is better heard than described. A total departure tonally form the LB-100. The signal output is very hot and many times I find myself playing with the volume at half mast.
It seems my band mates prefer the L1500 as it has this present signature tone that you cant miss though I actually prefer the LB-100 as its good for the soul.

Just ordered THIS today. I can't wait. Such a great color combination. If anyone has one, please post a pic. I haven't seen too many real-world pics yet.
