From what I gather from various G &L reviews, the scooped tone can be had, but the ability to stay clear with the treble rolled off AND dial up mid tones seems to really set them apart.
The Friedland review of The mj4 brings some of this out. Tunaman's review of rolling off the. Treble and maintaining a clear tone notes this as well with the lb 100.
So is this just evolution? Was the scooped tone just a function of earlier technology in pickups and amps? Not really intentional it just happened? It's does seem a lot of progress has been made in dialing mids in and fitting in a mix and G&L has been a major player in this.
All of which makes me more impatient for the MJ5.

How is the B string and overall tone of that L-1005? It's a stunner!!!

Wow! I love my blue swirl SB-1, but that purple metallic is incredible!
I don't know about that lovely bass but my L-1005 sounds absolutely perfect and the B string is somehow the best I've felt/heard. I am completely in love with it!
I showed the pic in this thread to my wife and she said "why isn't yours that color? Go fix it." I wish I had the money for a custom order, but I don't. Maybe in another year or two.

G&L bass pickups are very full across the whole tone spectrum and have a high output. They don't really need to be boosted at any frequency; cutting works best. The L-series basses with the passive bass and treble cut can sound scooped if you dime everything; cutting highs and lows lets the midrange come out. The M-series is even more flexible because you get the added midrange control with cut and boost on all the frequencies.
The MJ-5 should make an excellent five-string, especially with 60s pickup spacing. The low B sounds better with active electronics and a little more clarity with the stack-coil pickups (vs. dual-coil humbuckers) is also a good thing for the B string imo.
Just joined the G&L club. Picked up a new SB-2 for a great deal at [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. I play 99% upright, but have been playing slab in this band.
I've been borrowing a Creston bass, but figured I should own an electric and don't have the budget to commission a Creston....yet! Incidentally, Music Store Live is having a "GAS" sale, and selling off a bunch of gear at close to cost! I think you have to sign up for an account on their website, but there are a bunch of Fender and G&L USA basses on the list. Here's a question, can replacement pick guards be readily purchased somewhere? The pearl one doesn't do it for me!

8.8 lbs with a ton of aggression & a ton of vintage warm when I want. Best of both worlds. Full in the mids, no scoop J, no noise. A few minor fretboard dings but no biggie. Sounded GREAT with a test run through MB800 & GK NEO 115 stack. Abalone dots was standard? A TON of sparkle in this, way more than I expected!! Cool. Gotta RUN to practice!
There is a Royal Purple Metallic JB on ebay, at an unrealistic price. Tell your half and place an offer (or: place an offer first => double negotiation!). JB can go for as low as $1,000-$1,100, though not in that color.
