The diffs between the kilo and the SB-2 are what I remember from demoing the kilo six months ago. Plenty of room for both in the collection
Now *that* was fun! It's intoxicating just seeing a music store that has G&L basses on the wall to try out!
I'd certainly second @bonin in the boneyard that there's plenty of room for both since they sound so very different yet both have very interesting tones on offer. What I was really reminded of, though, is how much I love the fundamental sound of MFD pickups. Full stop.
Played my Tribute LB2500 today in jazz rehearsal. It sounded so good. I used the Sansamp patch on my Zoom B1ON pedal thru my Hartke amp. The Sansamp patch really warmed up the tone. Love these basses.
I just added another G&L to my stable yesterday.
I went to Guitar Center for strings and came out with a 1987 SB-1. Nothing fancy, but it sounds dang great! The price included the original HS case and they threw in a set of Chromes (which I'll most likely put on one of my other P-basses). The neck needs a little work - has a few high frets. Frets are overall in great shape, and the micro-tilt works well and hasn't caused any "ski-jump" issues. I'll have to shim it as I much prefer a solid shim supporting the screw(s) to the micro-tilt, which creates a fulcrum point further from the tension point and can cause ski-jump.
This makes my 4th G&L; I've got an early 2000's fretless L2500, a 1994 LB-100, the '87 SB-1, and a Tribute Legacy (strat). There will be more in my future.

I actually put D'Addario half-rounds on it yesterday for a session tonight. A bit brighter than pure flats, but not zingy like rounds. The album is more 70's outlaw country-inspired, so they wanted a midsy/ballsy P tone without too much zing or too much bottom. With a little judicious HPF and EQ from my Grace Felix, it's doing a really fine job nailing the tone.
My first G&L, a Himalayan Blue SB-1. Replaced the stock white pick guard with a pearloid one.
That pearloid looks really good with that color blue.
Now, if it just had pearloid blocks instead of white dots...
Congrats! Now that you have one, it will soon not be enough--and for good reason.
I like the white dots....its different and really nice. Not very noticeable. Subtle.
I tracked 6 songs on an album last night with the '87 SB-1. Let's just say that bass is fantastic! With a little HPF from my Grace Felix and some use of the passive tone control as needed, I was able to get absolutely everything I needed out of it. The sustain was just killer on the slow 6/8 ballad, the growl was insane on the Jerry Reed-inspired country-funk tune, and the articulation was perfect on the straight-eighth rocker. Three more songs to track tonight, including a Tom Petty-inspired Americana tune that I think the SB-1 will be perfect on. I had my LB-100 at the studio with old worn rounds, but the SB-1 just wouldn't let it have a turn. Fresh D'Addario Half-rounds on the SB-1, BTW.
I'm seriously planning to order a custom SB-1 now. If G&L would just do a 5-string split MFD and put it in a Kiloton chassis, I'd order one today. Deciding if I should gamble on the Kiloton 5, or just go with another SB-1 and add a D-tuner. Either way, I'm in love with this thing!
