Hi, folks! I got my new Kiloton yesterday, and figured I'd post it here. Are club member numbers still a thing?

Just a couple initial thoughts so far. Since I like to tinker, does anyone know if the OMG mode from the L-1000 would work with a single tone knob? I guess I could always duplicate that circuitry with a stacked pot. (I'm not generally willing to permanently modify anything, especially if it's still under warranty. So, drilling holes is right out.)

Anyway, really enjoying it so far.

The OMG mode modifies the switch, and has nothing to do with the pots, so yeah, totally doable. Your current switch should work fine, you just need to add a .1uF cap, and you would lose the series mode. Or, you could add the cap on a push/pull pot and switch it in/out of the circuit to keep the stock series option.

It appears that G&Ls are going a bit more mainstream than used to be the case—as they're also getting more expensive. Our little secret may be getting out...

I don't know about the current pricing.
What is clear is G&L is a leader in High Quality Standards over and above anything out there I'm familiar with and the pricing has been a great value for the level of quality offered up.

Instead of a traditional series humbucking mode, one coil of the pickup runs through a .1uF cap (imagine your tone rolled off all the way and then some) and the other coil is unaffected. High end from one coil, low end from two coils in each pickup...

So which position is OMG? Sorry I must be dense on this one. Is it on on the middle switch up? That is the fullest sounding position to me so far and my favorite.

I finally got to spend som quality time with my new 97 L2000 I am loving this bass. The neck is freakin huge and the string spacing is wide. So far I'm really digging the neck pickup with series and preamp on with treble boost. Just love that sound!Also like bridge with preamp off series I believe.

On my '89, it's middle switch forward, as they go front to back. My '00 (no OMG) was up/down, but I don't remember which way was stock as I oriented them like my '89. Either way, OMG should be louder and bassier than parallel humbucking, and there may be some hum because you're running unbalanced humbuckers at that point.

I'm gonna say that there isn't an OMG switch or mode on your bass. The L2000 has a series/parallel mode that you can switch between. Its usually the middle switch that you can toggle between the two. Forward position is Series..backwards position is parallel. The OMG mode is when the pickup is used only with one coil engaged and the other coil has a capacitor across it somehow. I"m not exactly sure of the wiring or the detail about the coil but generally, unless its been modified, the L-2000 is just series parallel. Some of the newer L2000 basses do come with a three way coil selector switch that lets you engage 'single coil' on top of the 'series' and 'parallel'.
The fuller sound you hear is most likely the 'series' Mode.

Is there any consensus on strings for the L2000/2500? I like the nickel DRs it came with alright. They sound fantastic for slap, but I was thinking maybe I'd try GHS nickel Boomers or Ken Smith Compressors on it. The Compressors are unreal good on my Sadowsky. They still have a slap tone but feel great in the hand, and warm everything up a bit. Don't want to go with full flats right now on this bass.

My thought is that the compressors (or pressurewounds) may boost the low mids to much, so thats why I thought I'd ask.

Also, is parallel mode supposed to be a fair amount louder? I don't mind it if that is the case, but the volume on the low end in parallel mode jumps pretty high compared to serial and single coil. I'm messing with a bunch of different tones so just figuring it out.

The DR's work well on this bass, but seem a little lacking in general character. I am leaning towards GHS boomers, but not sure if it will make a huge difference. I'm sure many folks here have gone through this process already!

The L's ship with D'Addario EXLs on them. Personally, I like DR Pure Blues on mine. The series mode will be louder and bassier; the parallel mode is a bit quieter and more defined.

OK that lines up with what I'm hearing.

The middle switch up is super huge output and way amount of bottom end.
There is a fair amount of hum that isn't there in any other position.
I think someone mentioned somewhere that if they had wired it X there wouldn't be any hum.

I'm no expert by any means but as I understand it your statement is correct for L-2000s after 1998 but before 1999 they all had the OMG wiring on the series position of the series/parallel switch and my L2000 bass is a 1997 edition.

I've had my L2K about a year and a half now. Most of that time I've had LoRider Nickel 105s and really like them, but been playing so much I'm getting sore fingers and have experimented with lighter the last little while.

I just this week switched from LoRider Nickel 100's (man, the E went badly and obviously dead fast) to Boomers 40-95, used em at a long rehearsal Thurs. Really liked the Boomers. Very high (tension is the wrong word, hard to press down), same as their big brother 105 set. I personally like that, I'm a ham handed rock picker. They sounded real good to me, sat better in the mix than the LoRiders - which surprised me, I've been using LoRider Nickel on about every bass of which I have several, for a year or so now and love them.

The DR pure Blues are on my L2500.
EB Cobalts flats are the best so far.
(Feel, and sound GREAT round-ish, and mellow nicely after a long while.. definitely a flat for slapping)
The Cobalt rounds second
The DR blues 3rd
GHS Brite flats worked well.
Hated Chrome's. (The b is always too dead and g too twangy, IMHO)
Have tried the Smith compressors, liked them, but the G string sounds weak.
Low Riders, nickle and steel. (Meh)
Tapes (meh)
Labella LTF nice.
Roto LD775 flats ( nice but STIFF )
DR black beauties I always want to like them.. but coating bugs me after a while.
DM flats were nice too.
