Oh yeah- in the unlikely scenario where you unbond with her as she whispers dark dreams of the Sonoran Desert...:drool:

That's her! CraigB is indeed the man, and I'm glad she's landed in a good home. Fantastic bass; the single coil mode is what I miss most. Glorious!

And if unbonding occurs, I'll drop ya a no obligation heads up. :D

Thanks! Yep, single coil all the way. You know what's really weird here? A few hours before you posted I put the fretless neck back on the L1K body as I had picked up a fretless SB1 with a jazz neck. It had been on my SB2 3-bolt and the bit of extra neck length on the 6-bolt put the SB2's MFD exactly into the LB100 pickup position. I can attest the MFD works just as well there. What REALLY changed things up is I recently took delivery of a couple of Audiokinesis cabs. Dukes "grind switch" tones them down for the SB's pups but when it's on the L1K's take on a new meaning to life mode. I feel the LB-100 would sound incredible through them. Since I have an '80 L1K fretless I'm considering putting a Hammon Darkstar in the Rocket L1K fretless. That pups been in my parts drawer way too long.

When I put it in the G&L registry, I called it Tobacco Sunburst. But looking at the USA finish page on the G&L site, it looks like it may be Old School Tobacco Sunburst instead. Check out the website SB-1 and a close up of my SB-2. Looks really close to me.

Yeah it does look very close. The finish that you and I have is a mid-90's-era finish. It must not have been too popular, haven't seen very many pop up over the years. That Old School Tobaccoburst wasn't always on the G&L finish menu to my knowledge, no clue when it appeared. I wonder if G&L decided to reintroduce the 90's version, and renamed it OST? Still wondering what it was called back then.

Fret the highest note on each string and then, with each pickup soloed, raise pickup height until you start to hear a chorus-y sort of warble when you pluck the string. Then lower the pickup until that warble just disappears. Once you've done both pickups, lower whichever pickup is louder when maxed until the levels match. That's your starting point: as loud and as bright as the bass will get. You can lower the pickups from there to soften the signal from a given pickup to suit or to alter the blend.

There's been some discussion here about the quality of the Tribute JB-2 pickups compared to their American kin. You may want to look that up. I replaced mine with Barts and now adore my Tribby JB-2. Enjoy!

BTW, does anyone know for sure what the "official" G&L name for this somewhat uncommon finish was? It's not Cherryburst, doesn't look like any G&L Honeyburst or Tobaccoburst I've seen or owned. Been wondering for years.

My '95 SB-1 in the same finish. The parchment guard looks pretty good, but that brown tort on your SB-2 is the ballz.

Fender might call that Sienna Burst (?). But could indeed be a G&L Honey Burst. Lovely specimen. :thumbsup:

Here are two crappy cell phone pics of my recent-ish Old School Tobacco Burst LB-100, much less red, more brown and less burst-y than others posted here.

Well, it happened again. I went to an open jam Saturday night and took my SB-2T. I got a comment that I get a lot with that bass. As I was leaving, a guy in the back of the room asked me if my bass was a G&L. I told him it was an SB-2. He said he loved the tone because the notes are so articulate and defined. He took my number because he want's me to work on a recording project with him.
I love that bass.

This is encouraging to me.
I'm not bonding with the pups in my NTM JB-2 and was thinking it would be a drag to buy a SB-2 Tribute if I had to replace those pups.

I have both basses as Tributes. The pickups in my JB-2 Tribute were very unimpressive and discussions on this board strongly suggested that they were *not* identical to the US version of that bass. Even the pickup dimensions were different. I've replaced the pickups and that JB-2 bass is a real winner. My SB-2 Tribute, though, has terrific pickups and is a lovely instrument. My guess is that the MFD pickups in the SB's, L's, etc. are not outsourced/substituted in the Tribute line while the JB-2's more "traditional" pickups have been.

I'll dig back through all these posts for answers but in the meantime, does anyone know of any current suppliers of pickguards, control plates, neck plate, pickup covers for a beast like these ASATs, or truly custom design shops that will take on the crafting thereof? They deserve so much more than a t-shirt and jeans all the time. By the way, can I be in your club?

I honestly wasn't blown away by my US JB-2 pickups either. They have since been replaced and now my ears are just as happy as my hands!!
