Not Gene? I bought a Gibson Grabber in 1975 because of the cover of Alive! BTW, wish I had kept that thing. But along with McCartney, Jaco, Carol Kaye and many others, a big reason why I love the bass.

Not Gene. Ha! I had seen Star Wars in 77. "Space" Ace was my man. I wanted to play guitar. But I couldn't. I could play bass guitar, tho. So I did and have. Gene was a genius, in many ways. Folk don't give him cred. I get it now. But Ace was who first drew me to wanting to play at all. And that 3 pickup Black Beauty G&L is wicked, and very sentimental.

Yeah, i don't like the cheese grater feel of the standard knobs.
These were actually Rickenbacker vintage style knobs, they do look like the vintage J bass knobs.
The first BABP G&L run was an L-2000 with some nice factory upgrades:
Swamp ash body
Blackburst finish (was not on G&L's menu at the time)
Quarter sawn #8 neck, satin finish
Ebony fret board, face dots-delete
Black painted headstock w/ BABP logo
K-switch mod
The forum members voted for which builder would get the order, and then what features the basses have. G&L was chosen, deposits were taken. I voted for John Wymore to build them, so didn't place an order. I forget how many were built....maybe ~ 20-ish? I'll check the ser #, but I had it in my head that they were built in '06 (?).
Years later I bought one from the TB classifieds. Still have it. The L-2000 is G&L's flagship bass IMO, and the BABP Ltd Ed is about as nice a bass as G&L is capable of building. They went the extra mile. Hats off to Pete for putting in the effort to coordinate the project.
I get what you're saying about the MJ-4. It is indeed a nice bass, although not without its shortcomings. Mine is real fussy about strings for some reason. Struggling to get it to sound great, I tried lots of different strings to no avail. Until I installed TI Jazz Rounds...now it performs up to my expectations. I think G&L should have arranged for the blend control to have a less abrupt, more linear taper. That's my only real niggle with it, but not a deal killer.
I also found that the dual-coil jazz pickups really do sound very close to true s/c pickups, more so than any others I've tried, just like Ed Friedland claimed in his vid review.
The M-2000....bought a Tribute on sale from MF, just to see if I liked it enough to order a USA one. Realized immediately it wasn't the sound for me, returned it, abandoned the idea. Evidently, the "M's" were destined for the dust bin of G&L history for lack of sales? Cheers.
Interesting comment regarding your experience with the M-2000, and I do respect your opinion as what works for one doesn't work for another.
I have an L-2500 Tribute and an M-2500 Tribute. Interesting thing is almost every time I've played the M-2500 live someone walks up and comments on how great its' tone is.

I wonder if someone with photoshop skills could help me. I am thinking about getting a pick guard for my JB2. As you know, this is no easy task. No one makes them as far as I know. And I don't know how to make them myself. So this would be pricey.
Before launching, I would be curious to see what it would look like. I have zero photoshop skills. Would any one be kind enough to photoshop the pick guard on this SB2 onto this JB2 for me (and anyone else who would be curious)? I would greatly appreciate it. Even if it's not perfect, at least I would have an idea. Thanks so much!

Looks like they began making them in house sometime in 2016. Prior to that, Pickguard Heaven made them. PGH makes them for the Tribute models, though.

Oh, I don't think the M-2K series is going anywhere. That's a very successful line where the re-designed MFDs and the preamp are a terrific match. For some of us, they're more interesting stage instruments than the L2K line. I'm with @One Way on this one. Every time I've played an M2000 or M2500 on stage, someone comes up and talks with me about the tone from the instrument. [BTW that *never* happened with my MJ-5.] They're instruments where the home tone really doesn't tell the tale.

I thought one of the main things that draw people to the JB2 is the LACK of a pickguard?!? Aside from that isn't it just a JB ? Or is it a totally different JB animal that I must soon capture and add to my growing stable?
The JB-2 is built on the L2K body, so not on the skewed JB-type body. No control plate or pickguard. Still the 1.5" nut like a J-bass, though, and J-bass VVT control strategy. Lighter and shockingly comfortable to play.
I personally like the no-pickguard look,but that looks really nice....more of a precision style pg,with the j bass pickups,nice combo.

PGH doesn't do JB2 Trib pick guards, as far as I know. I don't know anyone who does. But it is possible. It would just cost a lot.
I have a hard time with the JB body shape, hence why I went with the JB2.
