But if you look at Edgetone's red fretless above, it looks to have rounded tops. The build sheet on both basses says "Knurled Dome-top Chrome" so it's a mystery to me.

Well, looks like they have both. So I'm wondering if the white one was either changed out or incorrectly identified on the build sheet.

This is not something I'm losing sleep over but I love little mysteries, especially when just a curiosity. And in these times, lord knows I've got some time on my hands.

You're right! I just zoomed in on the picture. Looks like they offer both?

I wonder if they might offer both types of knobs? You can always contact G&L to be certain.

Yes , the Vintage white with Mint and Black Binding . They just need to send it back to paint to do the matching Headstock.

Well no, actually. The SB's also have MFD pickups and share tonal character with the L, M, SB, ASAT, Fallout, and Kiloton basses—and the Matador is only available as a custom build at present. The alternative to the MFD line would be the more standard JB, MJ, and LB basses which feature traditional pickup designs.

Edit: It appears that the MJ series has now disappeared.

I have an MJ-4 and I can't say I'm sorry to see that G&L no longer produces it. It's a fine bass but nothing special IMO. I'm not quite sure what they were trying to do with it. If I had to let on G&L go, it'd be that one.

But if you have one and like it, no offense intended.

Single coil mode is my favorite.

I did post some samples of it a couple years back. You can check them out in this post: G&L Kiloton 5 Fretless Samples.

I can see that. I did the single coil mod on my L2K and that's my favorite mode too. I especially like it for drop D tuning. It seems to drop all the flab out of the lowest notes.

Actually I'm with you on that. My MJ-5 was rather uninspiring, just as you say. I let it go and haven't missed it. I always thought there was something about it I just didn't get. By contrast my M-2500 with that same preamp is terrific and so's my JB-5. The MJ may just be a hybrid that didn't quite gel—at least for some of us. Still wish I could get a US JB-2.

personally, I prefer without the matched headstock, but you gotta get what you ordered!

My other two G&L's have unpainted headstocks . One is Satin Clear and the other is Light Satin . This one I had done in Vintage Satin and because it can sometimes be on the " too yellow " side , I decided to paint finish the headstock to keep the Vintage Tint on the fretboard to make the inlays " pop "

Yea, it just didn't work very well with that preamp. I'll sell it soon. At least I bought it used.

I've been watching reverb for a used jb-2. I still want a jazz bass of some sort because it's just such a unique sound.

I've thought about a 24 fret L-series bass numerous times now.

IMHO, a rear-routed, modified version of the SB/Kilo body would be a good starting point, along with an asymmetric, 5-bolt, sculpted neck heel.

I also owned an MJ-4 that didn't speak to me after having owned it for awhile. Probably the shortest ownership period for any bass. Sold it after about 2 years. It just didn't hit any mark in a meaningful way. It wasn't a bad instrument but it just didn't have much character. I bought it after finding it at a local store where it had sat for some time and after watching Ed Friedland's review. I think he sold that instrument not too long ago.

I bought the Kiloton sight unseen and wouldn't part with it. Got my eyes on an SB-2T next since I love the body shape/size that it shares with the K'ton.

If you're looking for a US model, there's a couple of gorgeous ones on there now.
I love my US jb2 so much, I'm considering getting a 2nd one for roundwounds.
(Mine has labella LTF flatwounds and sounds phabtastic.)
