NBD - 81' L1000 Rosewood board with (I'm guessing) Poplar body. Sounds and feels amazing. Very thin wide(ish) neck. Would love an original SB2 or El Toro but seems they are even harder to find than old Wunkays.
Am I the only one disappointed by the CLF research 40th ann SB1 reissue? It literally looks nothing like the original SB1. What's the point of a reissue when you don't stick to the original recipe? The reissue Wunkays look great though.

as for the SB-1, I think it was more of a commemorative edition and not a reissue. A first-gen SB-1 reissue would be cool, though!

I'm not sure there even was an SB-1 40 years ago.

Still think they should reissue the Lynx and El Toro. But only if the original elecs would be resurrected, which (to me) would be the whole point.

Really like the look of them ol' pre-lawsuit headstocks. I've tried, but a fish hook belongs on a fishin' pole, not a thunder stick...

Yeah I like both. My interest isn't so much in the headstock - I like the unique electronics / pickup. The neck is lovely too

Yeah it's a shame. Fender does this sometimes too. Reissues an instrument with mixed specs from different eras. I feel like it's just leaves most people disappointed. I would love to see some real deal G&L reissues. They have such and important legacy.

Its a proprietary size

You realize we'd all come to your house and take away your Kiloton if you did that right?

Nope. the measurements of the G&L MFD differ from the MM design.
MFD is (5 string) @ 43 mm x 106mm
the MusicMan style is @ 48mm x 116mm for the 5 string
differences are similarly disparate in dimensions.

Why would you WANT to? The MFD's are stellar pickups.
If they aren't your thing, go ahead and have the pickup slot routed out.
the string spacing on both (5 string) are 17.5 IIRC .

Or better yet, get a Stingray if that is more to your liking.

Thanks! Dunno how I missed this reply last week. I'm totally in love w/ it. If you're ever house cleaning & want to sell that guard let me know. That is exactly the guard that should be on this bass for me.

For now I cut one from bakelite for it last weekend, still needs a bit more sanding & likely a few coats of satin lacquer:

Here's another reason you don't want to do this. Here's a gorgeous l-1500 that someone did that too. Been on reverb for months.

Got my paint done on the SB-2. Came out decent. Also got the new pickguard from Pickguard Planet. It's actually a one ply flat black guard but it's kind of hard to tell with the plastic on it. I'll post another pic when I get it all out back together.

Or, here is the opposite point. If you are looking to replace the MFD with a MM pickup, buy this one instead.

Good guard job! I have an SB2 that missed the cut off date for receiving that black metal guard though she looks fine in tort. So ya never know. That emerald green SB1 is one of the best G&L's I ever owned out of a bunch and love that finish. My aging wrist and shoulder are now appreciating my lighter weight basses though the lighter ones never seem to dig quite as deep as the heavier ones. I played her more than my '62 P she's that special. The jazz neck on my SB2 matches up better with this jazz-necked SB1:

Here is a little more of my Climax Bass.

Funniest thing - the neck date is Feb 18 1999, signed by Tony. AFAIK Climax basses were long gone in 1999, just like serial numbers starting from B028***. Another G&L mystery made bass from parts found at the warehouse? The color also is quite unusual.

After modding the pickup (adding capacitor) I went back to stock wiring with preamp 1.0 with treble boost, humbucker/single mode. Trying to learn how to use this bass right now.
