G&L Club Part 7

Using TI jazz rounds on my JB5. I know it is not an SB-1, but they are insanely low tension strings. I love them, but even at full scale they require finesse to play correctly. This isn't a bad thing. Again I like them. They are just different.

My L5000 has TI jazz flats on it. They sound fantastic with the p style MFD on that bass. They are also a little higher tension than the rounds (though still quite low tension).

How is the setup on your SB-1? Been a long time since I have played a set and everyone is different, but I don't recall the Daddario XLs being particularly stiff. Makes me wonder if it is a setup issue more than a string issue (noting I am not you and your idea of stiff and mine might be completely different and the setup might be fine).

OK, yeah the short scale TI set is pretty much the limits of finesse I think will work for me for an all arounder kinda bass currently. Just love the texture & slinky-ness of them on that bass & they seems plenty authoritative in tone for me too.

Both my assessment & the much more weighty assessment (for me anyway) of my luthier friend was the SB-1 should be spot on setup-wise for the strings. When I'm saying stiff I don't think it so much the fretting effort required, but the lateral flexibility once fretted. I'd have sworn that E was a .110 or .115 before we broke out the micrometer on them. I've got along fine w/ a .105 w/ the nickel wound Swing Bass set on the Ric or really any flats I've tried on a few different 34" scale basses so I'm wondering if it's just the texture of the windings that make it feel a bit thick on there for me.

Yes I have one of those Ms...I love it.

Have ever compared the colour to Olympic white? I gather that Olympic white is a little beiger...but I've never had them side by side to compare.

Yup. Had one of those white Tribute M2000's per my photo above (it was lovely although the neck constantly needed adjustment) and my current Olympic white M2500: both at the same time for a while. The former was brilliant, snow white while the Olympic white is just off-white like an interior trim white paint you might use at home.

A friend of mine gets *all* of his basses in tobacco sunburst for the same reason.:rolleyes:

How do you explain away the 20 pound giant box at the door?

I didn't think I would like the white on white with matching white headstock combo as much as I do but it's awesome. Really stands out in a crowd. Kind of like how good vanilla is really anything but "vanilla" in the bland sense.

All my basses are bursts 'cuz that's how I roll. But I never thought about using that to my advantage before. :laugh:




Kidding aside, I know better than to try hiding such a large purchase. All of mine were bought after clearing it up front first. Smaller dollar purchases, such as pedals and my "backup" speaker cabinets, are a different story since I've bought them with the allowance I give myself and/or gig money.

I thought that too but the place was finished in 1926 and it's all plaster and lath. 14' ceiling in this room.
Super solid construction and I'm fighting with WIFI Ethernet routers and wireless transponders right now.
Nothing shakes or vibrates all though the room is way to revberant for solo bass. Plenty of other rooms to test!

First of all, best. signature. ever. Secondly, are you talking about "backup" cabinets as in the ones you leave places because, well, too lazy to cart gear (plus I like buying gear)? What are your faves?

Finally, that red is just so sweet. I love the whole combination. And the tie-in to the red stripe on the SWR head, intentional or not, is cool.

Ha! I do like buying gear and definitely have more than I need. :facepalm: It's a common sickness around here.

When I joined my current band last summer, they wanted to start playing some outdoor gigs so I was thinking that I might want a "beater" or backup cab or cabs. My gigging cabs are a pair of Barefaced Big Baby 2's and I've been completely happy with them. But for outdoor gigs in the summer when thunderstorms can pop up quickly, I might not want to risk having them get caught out in the rain. So I started looking around and eventually found a pair of used/mint Hartke Hydrive HD210s, one on Sam Ash's Reverb site and one on GC's used site. One was a good deal and one was a really good deal, so I ordered both. They sound very different from my BB2s, but I still like them. So now I have options for tone and also for being lazy and keeping cabs in our singer/BLs practice space.

But that was mostly just a long way of saying ... more gear. :D :facepalm: :laugh:
