My wife can't differentiate either. Doesn't even notice when a new bass appears. There was a time when I only had solid color basses, and a sunburst Sire arrived. After a couple of days of it hanging on the wall of the home office we shared, I made an allusion to "the new bass," but she hadn't noticed that the sunburst Sire had taken the place of a black Squier.

Another time I tried to explain how each one had a different pickup configuration better suited to this or that type of tone or music. I think the explanation actually pained her.

Although once I had two amps and was in the process of selling one, and she mentioned that she liked the tone of the "smaller one" better (which happened to be the one I was keeping). That was awesome :)

One thing that I have noticed about this bass, it seems to pick up a lot of electrical noise (hum) through the pickups. It especially does not like the ceiling fan in my practice area. Dimmers and fluorescent lights, too. My other G&L basses do not seem to exhibit this problem to the same extent. My two SB-2 basses are relatively quiet by comparison. Is that due to the difference between the MFD pickups of the SB-2's and the Alnico 5 pickups of my JB? Or does this JB just need better shielding work done to it?

Likely both. Pop the control plate and have a look at the shielding (or more likely the lack thereof). Do you still get significant hum with both pickups full up?

Thank you for the help. I get significant hum with either pickup, or both pickups, full up. I can get a lot of the noise reduced by using the tone control, but by doing that I mess up the tone of the bass. Sounds like I need some shielding work done?

Oh man, that is total hotness! I've thought about getting a Fullerton Red JB-5 with tort and maple, but this is giving me other ideas...it never ends...:help:

Yes, it does make a difference if I touch the strings. Thank you for your advice on checking the condition of all the ground leads.
