G&L Club Part 7

Just wanted to pop in and say Greg over at @RocketMusic is the man. I ordered a JB-5 build a few weeks ago through them, and I’ll tell you, it’s customer service at it’s finest. Super fast response time via email, confirmation when he receives my payments, and very knowledgeable. Greg and Rocket made the ordering a breeze and I’ll go through them every time. Thanks again! Can’t wait for my bass!

When I ordered my fretless L-1500 through Guitarman NYC, they sent me a picture when they received it. After a close inspection, and telling myself it must be the angle, I sent an email to ask to do some measurements before sending the bass to me in the Netherlands. They confirmed my suspicions that the pickup was in the L-2000 bridge-position... It was sent back, and G&L made me a new one. Of wich the neck broke during transport, but that's another story.
So I guess this must have happened a few times.

Is anyone else ever puzzled by people's almost religious attachment to Fender basses? Fender seems to put more into marketing than into making new and interesting basses. There's always some reissue (IE new pickups) of either a Jazz or Precision bass. No one seems too interested in their P/Js or active basses or their attempts at doing something like a Music Man or G&L.

What am I missing? Am I too harsh on Fender?

I don't think most people on TB represent the masses.
That's what I've thought for a long time.

oh, and just so you know where I'm coming from, I think the Dimension was a laughable attempt to one-up Big Poppa for introducing passive P and PJ basses. or so it seems to me. how'd that one turn out?

the "vintera" name is also laughable, what's next "super duper really old?"

Not at all. And I find it ridiculous that an off the line Ultra with zero options, 10 pounds, and noisy as hell pickups is around $2200, and I just ordered a totally custom JB-5 with every option chosen to my liking, built just for me, that’ll come in at around 7.5 pounds for $1800. It’s ok to be harsh when you’re correct :-)

Keeping mental track of every possible variant and anomaly in a production environment is almost impossible. That's what records are for - so nobody has to remember off the top of their head why there's particular variation - especially after any kind of time has passed. Someone along the way might remember, but it's just another even in a long long line of events that happen in any kind of production.

Beautiful neck on there.

Getting it set up today... it came with a set of flatwounds, which was nice, but that's not what I plan to keep on there. Still, I put the flatwounds on there just to test it out.

They won't stay on long, I have some shielding supplies coming this weekend, in the G&L tradition there isn't a lick of shielding anywhere in the whole guitar.

Also, I feel I'll be needing a shim in this bass.

Nice thick neck on it, though... and it sure is beautiful. I'll get it all set up the next couple weeks, put some round wound strings on there and see how I like it.

I dunno. As a European customer, ordering from G&L (no fancy options) cost me twice the price of my Fender Am St, which may indeed be terribly common and boring, but still very good value for the price in my position.
