I was under the impression that newer ones didn't have the OMG mode (series with a cap to shunt highs if I remember right?).

Yes, you're right. My mind had it right, but translating to what I was typing was wrong. Older = OMG.
Newer = series.
My '81 L2K Series-E has a black bridge and chrome control plate. As you can read below the red splitter switch selected either humbucking or single coil mode with an increase in bass ratio. Not sure if this is the same as the single coil mode with bass boost (OMG) on the L1K.
On my series-E in passive mode, that single-coil mode's increased bass was pretty sweet.

My build sheet says "K-Spec" on the pickup controls. I'm assuming this means the single coil mod since it the middle switch has 3 positions. I emailed G&L twice to confirm this, but never heard back.

Oh, man, I keep forgetting how handy everybody is on TB. So many of you folks are luthiers with EE degrees, where I'm just a simple old software tester.
I meant, I would like to know what named feature of current (or past) stock instruments would provide that sound. Like, alnico pickups or (the other kind). A K-switch thingy or not. OMG mode or not (if we even get that term defined here for us newbies.)

OMG is the slang for the "single coil with bass boost" (G&L official name).
Essentially, one coil of each pickup goes through a capacitor to ground off all the high frequencies and the other coil in the pickup is unaffected. So you get the high end qualities of a single coil and the low end of a humbucker.
It was standard on the L-1000 and the L-2000s made up til about '98/'99. Climax/L-1500 did not have it. Admittedly, I don't know if the older ASATs had it or not.
It's a simple thing to remove if you have it and don't want it (just clip the caps out). If you want it and don't have it, it's cheap to get the caps, but you have to be able to solder and have comfort with wiring.

And I don't suppose an LB100 could do OMG mode, could it? Or an SB2-T? (Those are my next 2 G&L gasses.) Or do I have to add an L to my GAS list?

These last few comments have made me wonder what wiring I would have in both my mid 90's L2000 basses (in regards to parallel/series/OMG). Is there any way to tell by just looking at the wiring? Both my basses have only a 2 way switch for this (no 3 way/single coil/K-mod as far as I'm aware). Basses are both '96/'97 date of birth.
Any way to tell? I can't read wiring for the life of me and don't know what I'm looking at but I can post a photo on here if it is obvious to spot?

Yea, the OMG lines up pretty close to the transition from 3-bolt to 6-bolt neck attachment (3-bolt would have OMG). The alnico L-series pickups are rare. And no, you can't do OMG with LB-100 or SBs. The pickups need to be a standard humbucker with two full coils for each string. In theory, you could do it to an M-2000......
I spoke too soon. The new battery didn't solve the problem. And it's happening in passive mode, not active. Really noisy, scratchy pot, and it seems to be cutting out at the halfway point also.
Yep, k mod is so excellent. It's like a jazz bass that wants to punch you in the face.

Pull the cavity cover off. The middle switch would have two green capacitors on it if you have OMG.
