Could I joined the G&L Club?

I found a G&L USA L-2000 Bass in a Japanese Instrument listing site (something like a Japanese version of Reverb) in the last weekend. The sale price was lower than many Japanese and Indonesian Tribute models of similar condition listed on the net.

I'm a novice bass player who has just started to play a bass a couple of months ago with a Squier VM Mustang Bass, although I've been playing a guitar for a long time (I posted this NBD on TDPRI first. ). I could not pass the G&L up. The bass followed me home.

This is my first long scale bass. The neck is a little chunkier than the Mustang (1 5/8 at the nut. PB size?). Looks like the bass has not been modded except for the JB style volume and tone knobs. According to the original sales receipt in the case, it was purchased by the former owner as a new from a shop in the northern Japan in early 2005. This has no Kmod installed.

G&L Tribute ASAT Special I just got out of the Talkbass Classifieds of all places.

I wish the neck had worked for me on that guitar. Really liked the look and sound of it.

I have brand-new L-2000, and already I have a question.

While at the shop test-driving the bass in their sound-proofed "bass room", I noticed that the volume pot was very scratchy when the bass was in active mode, but silent in passive mode. I went back out to the main shop and asked about it. They plugged into a different amp and the pot was silent. They said, "the bass room has dirty power" or something to that effect. Since the bass worked perfectly out in the main shop, I assumed this was the case, and it may very well be. Here at home, I'm finding the same issue: volume pot is scratchy in active mode, silent otherwise. My amp is plugged into a surge suppressor but not a power conditioner.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I would start by installing a fresh battery. Active electronics do not like dead batteries. While it may not be the battery, it is a simple first thing to check.

Will do. Thanks. I might also try some de-oxit in the pot.

It was the battery. Even on a US-made bass, the original equipment battery is one of those cheap-o "pro cell" ones. Thanks.

Thanks again. The guitar was spotless. Both my guitarists tried it out at practice and were impressed. So much so, that I bought the Tribute JB when Musician's Friend had it as the Stupid Deal of the Day.

Mostly it’s the neck of mine that I prefer to change. It’s a slimmer, jazz width neck. I forget the exact profile. I’d like a chunkier neck which comes standard on most L-2000s to my knowledge. I’ve considered swapping the neck, but I’m not super in love with the look either. I love the black control plate and black bridge on the older ones. Apparently the black hardware isn’t even available through the custom shop.

The only thing I’m head over heels about is the sound of the bass. I wouldn’t want to be without an L-2000, that’s for sure.

@RissKippery Just FYI, the older L-2000s will definitely feel different, but they’re going to sound different too. The series mode on the newer ones like yours (which I think is gorgeous, by the way) is different - it’s the OMG mode, which is quite a different sound. You may love it, but you can remove a couple of capacitors if you want the more current series setting.

BTW, the very oldest L2K's did not always have the black plate and bridge. I'm pretty sure my L-2000-e had them both shiny (i.e. stainless or chrome). Sold it awhile ago or I'd post pitchers fer ya...

Look for Ed Friedland's Bass Whisperer Youtube account. He's demo'd recent G&L basses, as have Steve Araujo and Ivan Bassist (posts here as Iv@N), also on Youtube. G&L also has a Youtube account with demos.

@RissKippery, do us a favor and post here the best example you find? I've wondered about that too.

My old L2000-e sounded pretty darn nice as it was, so I've always wondered what's this thing called "OMG." (Curious but too lazy to do that kind of research.) But happy to leverage YOUR work... ;->

The earliest G&L’s had chrome hardware.
