G&L Club Part 7

Just counted on my fingers and toes and have realised that the factory have had my SB-1 back with them for about six weeks, just so they can replace the neck. Six weeks! It only took them 10½ weeks to build the whole thing in the first place (order acknowledged Mon Sep 21st, bass shipped Fri Dec 4th)

To pass the time, I'm tormenting myself with this advert for an SB-1 with quartersawn neck, 1½" nut and 9½" fingerboard: G&L SB-1 Vintage White Rosewood quarter sawn neck Someone please buy it so I can at least enjoy that combination of neck specs on an SB-1 vicariously? :rolleyes:

Well, sorta. The whole factory was shut down the week between Christmas and New Year's, so they didn't actually have the bass in their hands until Jan 3. Sorry this is dragging on!!

I must say I love your upbeat yet causticly humorous attitude about the whole process! I would very much love to sit in a pub with you and get pissed someday. :)

Sounds like he's already a little pissed (not at you). Oh, you mean the British "pissed"...nevermind! ;)

Over here we add "off" to the version of "pissed" that I am resolutely not - I'm cheerfully refusing to let this ridiculous quirk of theirs spoil my enjoyment of the only expensive bass I ever expect to buy, so I'm not hacked off, let alone pissed off or #¥€£ed off. Besides, what is mere time when it's a sub-7lb p-bass you're waiting for? :woot:

Furthermore, the delay seems to have helped me buy myself a Yamaha BB424, and that's very far from problematic. :bassist:

Has anybody added threaded metal inserts to their G&L, so that the battery and preamp screws aren't simply going into the wood of the body? I've had far less expensive basses that added this simple, but really nice, touch, and I'm wondering if it is difficult to DIY.

You don't think that might be over-engineering the task of holding a plate on?

In OMG, one of the coils on each pickup has a capacitor which drains some treble to ground. With the signal boost of going to series mode (from, say, parallel), the impression is of a bass boost although it's a purely passive effect.

OMG retains some clarity on the top end and gives the perceived boost in the bass.

Standard series boosts the low end similarly, but it’s not as noticeable because the mids are much thicker and more full and the top end is a little subdued.

You can tell by lightly tapping the two pickup coils with a small screwdriver (with the bass plugged in). When in series mode, the tapping sound is the same on both coils. In OMG mode, one coil will yield much less top end when tapped.

Not usually a fan of tort but it really plays well against that sunburst. Very nice! I gotta get me a current generation SB-2 with a wider neck like that someday. Can I ask how long ago you ordered it?

Isn't it funny. I really like the series mode of my bass, but if it truly is OMG, by your descriptions I think I would like standard series mode better!!! Isn't it always typical....we always want what we haven't got!!!
Is OMG mode easily removed/changed to standard series? Is it a matter of simply un-soldering the caps?

Nah, I’ve got a first gen ‘83 SB-2 so it has the usual early 1-11/16” nut width and 7.5” radius neck. It’s great. Current gen comes with the 1-1/2” nut standard so wider necks are less common. I need me a little more meat down there.
