It's far more professional to use threaded inserts instead of wood screws. My G&L's are passive so I have no idea how much material you are working with. McMaster-Carr will have threaded inserts that have male threads to screw the fastener the bass and then a female thread for a machine screw.

I can clearly see that the headstock on this vintage SB-2 is slimmer than the current CLF ones. I like this headstock so much better!

I completely agree, and IMO ideally it would be a noiseless J. When I had an L-1500, I considered adding a DiMarzio Model J to create an MM/J configuration, but of course an MFD J would be better! :bassist:

I had a SB-2 that was dated early 90's and strangely it had a very thin version of the original headstock. Even thinner than the pic you refer to. It was like a sickle. Weird that it was on a bass well after the hook was added in early-mid 80's

MFD J pickups have been around for awhile now. They sell them right on G&L site. The only model that I know that uses them is the SB2. And that is only the bridge obviously. I was going to buy set last year for a jazz bass, but might look using them in a custom shop design instead. Would be nice if they offered them on their Jazz bass.

The MFD J that is currently being referred to is not the SB2 bridge pickup. There have been prototype photos and even a forum member with the MFD J (standard housing sized J). In fact, the forum member's bass was for sale on the forum earlier this year with the new pickups.

that is the same pickup i am talking about. and the same one on the SB2 and the sb2 tribute. Also found for sale on G&L site.
