when was the last time you walked into a store and saw a you make your own price sign? That’s why fender, G&L ect have price lists for the dealers. If I am selling my bass I’m not listing it as pay what you feel. Lol
Again a banana isn’t worth $50 just because someone is willing to pay $50. It may be worth it to that person. But that doesn’t mean it’s worth that price.

It happened when I moved a year ago, during cold weather. I hauled all my bass gear in a U-haul trailer. All basses in their cases, stacked upright and secured. Nothing was dropped or impacted during the move. Gear unloaded and moved immediately into the new house. This MJ4's tolex case wasn't opened for months after the move, way more than enough time for the bass to acclimate. That's when I saw the cracks.
Apparently, just the (uneventful) 650 mi trip was too much for this bass. Surprising that it happened at all, really. I just figure the neck was not stable from the beginning, and 24 hours in the cold (low 20's F) was the breaking point. Internal stress point?...inherent weak spot due the the heavily flamed neck wood?

I'm not associated with G&L in any way but I'd give their customer service department a jingle, explain the situation along with photos and see if they have any interest in seeing the bass for flaws. I had one issue in the past that they took care of despite the fact I was not the original owner. I got a new neck from them, no charge. Stand up folks over there, just saying.
I suppose it wouldn't hurt to ask, even for a long shot possibility (really long).

That is unfortunate. I'm in no way suggesting that there is more to the story, but the only time I've ever seen anything like this on a Fender-style neck was when the bass (an actual vintage P-bass) fell flat on it's face and hit the headstock first, causing a crack at the transition. Unlike a Gibson, I don't believe it actually broke through, but it split down the neck like this.
Give G&L a call and send them the pics. The worst they can do is say no.

I thought G&L owed me for a faulty neck until the luthier hipped me to a bent tuning key. Anyway, it was repairable and I'm sure so is yours. In fact you cannot even tell it was repaired until you look at the headstock closely. There is the crack line. Other than that, the bass hasn't missed a beat. You ought to get it fixed and enjoy.

It's only happened to me twice, both times involving a G&L bass. First time when I sold a custom L-2000 on ebay. Shipped it during frigid weather in January. Buyer contacted me on arrival showing pictures of a crack across the headstock and up the sides of the neck a couple inches. Same as this MJ4, but not as severe. I refunded him and filed a UPS damage claim, which they denied on inspection because the shipping box showed no apparent damage, and also because I hadn't slackened the strings before packing. I fought them for months before finally giving up.
But there is a possible a clue: Those were my only two G&L's that ever "travelled" inside their G&L Tolex hardcase in cold weather. Never had an issue with the old style molded plastic cases or even gig bags, regardless of weather conditions. Coincidence?...maybe. I suspect the tolex cases may have been contributing factors to the damage. I haven't gotten around to taking measurements yet, but if the cutout where the neck rests inside the case is not deep enough, then there may be pressure on the headstock from above, when the case is closed. If so, that might be enough to help crack a headstock in extreme cold weather during travel.
Meanwhile maybe I'll give G&L a shout. Will report back if I do. Cheers.
