G&L Club Part 7

I'd guess the big automakers have a significant investment in their IT department that a MUCH smaller outfit like G&L couldn't hope to afford in their wildest dreams. Love the idea though...

Having worked on IT for a few car dealers, and having helped out G&L on a couple of small IT issues, I can tell you that is very much the case. But G&L has made some small changes in their IT/Web presence world and with the huge growth they are undertaking in production/operations, I imagine it too will catch up at some point.

Even if they just published a list that was updated from time-to-time, weekly, monthly, whatever, of what was shipped to whom, that would be a start. Wouldn't take an XML guru to do that would it? I'd do it! :)

my understanding is the G&L custom shop is more like a custom option shop. They are all built in the same place by the same people and built the same way, but with various custom options. Custom shop implies that its built differently and in G&L case they are just custom options added to the production line. I found all this out when I was looking to order a custom shop matador with all sorts of options. What i was told is there are custom shop builds take 6 to 8 months. And custom option builds that are done right along with the standard builds.

I checked that link and i am familiar with it. But have not seen it in about 4 months. I dont recall all of those pickups back then and I follow all the G&L releases and dont recall seeing that pickup. Would be nice to know what it sounds like. I would assume it sounds great since their Jazz, LB100 and MFDs all sound amazing

I can tell you for certain that is absolutely not the case. The Custom shop is it's own shop, and there is one person who builds each custom shop instrument completely themselves. Yes, the shop is technically in the same building as the regular production facilities, but only the custom shop guy works on the instrument in his shop. And from top to bottom, sanding, painting, to winding the pickups it's all done by him. Certainly, standard parts are pulled from the production departments where needed, but the instrument doesn't leave the custom shop.

In the video Ivan interviews Dave, who's a really great guy, he did the special option paint on my M2500. But as I remember, he's not doing the custom shop work at the moment.

I thought I had read something along these lines but could not find the source (which is why I did not previously post a similar reply to the same post). Glad to see someone confirm it and that I was not going crazy.

Well once they get done with the expansion and up to full production, that might be an option for them. But at that point it'll be a lot easier to find a G&L out and about.

Regarding the inner-webs stuff above:
Starts to get tricky if you'd want to know which were special-ordered for someone vs. ordered for display in the window. Then there's the question of which ones are still in the window vs. gone out the door.

Maybe an easier way to achieve your goal might be a Google-ish search that found only G&L basses for sale at dealers. Like an "aggregator" site, isn't that what they call it?

Yeah...I guess. I was just thinking how convenient it would be to do a dealer inventory search in one place. Right now if you hit Reverb, eBay and then the usual suspects of stocking dealers, you figure what's out there. It's sub-optimal iMHO and something I wish was easily remedied.

NBD. Perfectly executed by G&L. Wow!

Hey, just thinking about finding a G&L bass or guitar at the various dealers around the country and how really hard that is.

Why don't manufacturers, like G&L, take a cue from car companies and show dealer stock, or at least what's been shipped in the last 6 months or so, at their website? So you could configure an instrument to your basic wants including model, color, neck and any other major variables, and the G&L website would show you which dealer has what you are looking for or something close to it? It would be so cool to see inventory at a point in time and browse that way rather than trying to remember to visit each individual dealer (or keep their websites accessible in the browser). It would also serve G&L by having dealers update their stock on hand information regularly which I'm sure they wouldn't mind.

I find the process of finding the instrument you are looking for tedious, time consuming and less-than-fun. Go to any major auto manufacturer and this is a standard practice. I know their dealers are much more connected to the mother ship than a typical guitar store, but I would love to see someone take a whack at it. Thoughts?
