G&L Club Part 7

your new, perfect dream bass
Ooh, there's another positive spin I can put on this: once I have the bass which will make me need to stop looking lustfully at all the others, I'll also be heartily sick of the whole business of acquiring them

Frustration and impatience can move quickly from being natural reactions to becoming an engrained habits. Do I want to spend months at the mercy of a pleasureless habit? Or do I want to enjoy myself? Easy choice. And if I feel a mournful moment creeping up on me, to nip it in the bud I just listen to this video to remind myself that something really wanted is worth all the waiting in the world:

What a noise!

Maybe QC inspects it this time...

I've been working on a L-2500 Tribute for a while now. I picked it up with a broken truss rod & decided to replace the fret board when I replaced the truss rod, making it black & maple.

Tribute experts, been searching for a while and there does not seem to be a nice, clear answer to this question anywhere:

What are the best options for lightweight tuner replacements? (LB-100 in this case, but I’m pretty certain they are all the same.)

Is it just Hipshot ultralights and leave extra holes visible, or is there some other/better option?

1/2” posts?

Gotoh res-o-lites might fit the bill, as they have the 4 satellite screws. Anyone used? Worth checking out.

I don’t think those are an option. I’ve got a set of aged ones here (GBR640) to put on my Road Worn P. I know they will work for my Player J as well. But just some loose measurements, the posts on the LB 100 are about .5 cm closer to the straight edge of the headstock than the two Fenders. The angled part of the base plates will stick out beyond the edge.

Also, size wise, the plate on the OEMs is longer below the gear, so it seems like those holes will show as well. Fail all around!

I’m curious as to what you want to achieve by changing the tuners...

Short answer: As stated in the post, lightweight tuners. That bass is a bit heavier than I would like, but also has some neck dive that exacerbates that issue for me.

More: As it stands, it’s not getting much playing time, but I like a lot of things about it and the negatives put it just over the line for me. I’m finding that balance is a big factor that goes along with perceived weight and shoulder impacts. I have a 90s LB-100 fretless that is not much lighter, but balances perfectly and feels great for long stretches standing. The weight savings, particularly at the end of the headstock, seem like they might be enough to do the trick. I already have the bass, so sticking some Hipshot ultralights on it to get it back fully in the rotation - and potentially giggable - might be worth it, and if I ever go to sell it I could pull them off and put the stock tuners back on without any visible issues. But more of a direct drop in would be, of course, easier and better if it exists. It’s either doing something with it that will put a smile on my face when I pick it up to play it, or cut it loose and move on to something else that will work better for me (but will take more $$$).

Asking the question here because I see it posted many times around different forums, and the threads typically just peter out with “yeah, the standard tuners are heavy” and “yeah, the USA tuners are not the same”...

Seems like there is at least consensus on 1/2” posts, but hoping to get that confirmed here as well by someone who knows.

Are the USA G&L Ultralights an option? In the G&L Online store. I have 3 USA G&Ls, but the only Tribute I have is a guitar, so I can't really compare anything there.

Yeah, the annoying thing with the G&L website/ultralights is that they provide no specs at all. So it is difficult to know how much weight savings might be achieved, how many extra holes need to be drilled/whether or not you can use some of the existing holes, will it cover the existing holes, etc.

The shape looks different to me than the Tribby tuners, again with a stubbier length of plate below the gear, but it’s hard to tell these things just by eyeballing it. My 90s G&L has the old Schallers that they were using at the time, seems to be the same shape as their current ultralights, but again, eyeballing is not a good basis for moving forward.

Hoping someone here may have tried them?

If I do just end up doing the Hipshots (or other), I will weigh both sets and post the data and pics here for posterity.
