...oh sh*t, THAT’s why you guys like these things so much. Played the 2K through a Mesa Walkabout that I like but usually find too relaxed. Not today though- the L2000 drove it pretty nicely and made it every bit as aggressive as I wanted it to be.
This thing is a slap monster with both pickups on. Just gnarly. Super aggressive but not clacky on top, which I like. Felt like I could pull a Flea tone out of it if i twiddled a little more.
Didn’t care for the bridge pickup on its own at all.
Neck pickup was a little bright at times, I wish I had more of a tone cut available.
It plays great (though I did have to file the nut down considerably, it was pretty sloppily cut as it came). I originally brought it to rehearsal to give it a shot at being a backup, and ended up liking it a lot better than I expected to, even though I definitely have some learning to do with regard to the controls. Guess the L2K is coming out to play a little more.
I definitely will do this. I experimented with it a little bit and it did seem to get mellow at lower volume settings but it leads to a delicate dance between the volume and the two tone controls when I want to maintain the same sound and simply get louder or quieter.
I also think there’s some wiring issues I’ll need to sort with this bass. The bass cut acts as it (probably) should through the first 20% of its travel, and then turns into a volume control- the signal strength tails off hard. The treble control never seems to get all the way down to 0, and instead gives this nasty resonant peak in the mids when it’s all the way shut. The volume is also similar- most of the action is within the first 10-20% of the knob’s travel.
Thanks to all of those things I ended up playing with all the controls nearly full for most of the night and just familiarizing myself with the switches and the changes I could make to the tone with attack, hand placement etc. It’s a pretty responsive bass to those things, which I enjoyed. Ended up turning off my compressor for everything but slap, too. That surprised me.
I’m hoping that my issues with the pots are simply that the factory installed regular taper pots into the bass instead of reverse taper, and that simply reversing the two outer tabs on the pots will solve my issues. Most of my other basses have that “backwards” setup anyway. It feels like I’m driving a car without a speedometer right now, so hopefully that simple mod will allow me to use the electronics as intended. Fingers crossed.
This is normal, and not exclusive to G&Ls, though I think it’s more noticeable with the MFDs. Just roll back to 90% off and you’ll get a deeper cut.
Has anyone replaced the output jack on an L2K? I got a late 90s L2K a month or so ago that made a lot of noise any time the cable would move around. I cleaned it out with some DeoxIT that took care of most of the problems, but the cable still wiggles around a little bit and will cut out from time to time. It doesn't seem like there's a way to get in there to push the little connecting prongs closer together, I might need to replace the entire jack. I don't trust myself enough with a soldering iron so if that's my only option I may end up dropping it off at my luthiers. I don't mind doing that but he's pretty busy so it'd be like a month turnaround time probably.
yeah, those old barrel jacks are prone to failure. Replacing them with a similar one is easy - unscrew the nut from the inside, push the jack out and unsolder three wires, then repeat in reverse to put the new one in.
G&L has since started using a plate-mounted jack that is much more reliable.
Maybe you can call him and ask him when he could take it so that he could do it sooner than a month turnaround.
I mean why should it sit there waiting so long. Just bring it in when he can do it. Schedule it. Just a thought.
Six days later, and I've been told that my SB-1 is almost on its way. I hope it enjoys its final sunny weekend in California, a very different life awaits it.And now seven weeks
When it stops off in Virginia on its long journey eastward, it will be united with a set of Rotosound Swing Bass RS66LD. Hopefully, the 66s and the splitcoil MFD will find that they're singing from the same hymn sheet.
I have a fretless SB-2T that has a set of Roto 66's that I just put on about a week ago! And it sounds AMAZING!
might want to give those Daddaros a try first. I still have my original set on my SB1 and it sounds awesome!
