Good to know. I have read nothing but great things about G&L and after many years finally decided to pull the trigger. The QA issues that have been mentioned are surprising. Should I look into Sandberg etc? I am done with Fenders.
My Sandberg's (both Indonesian made) are as good as both my Tribute and Fullerton.
My two offshore Lakland's are also higher quality than either G&L.
I think the QC and G&L is only OK based on issues friends have had as well as myself.
The Laklands set up much better but the necks are too thin front to back.
The Sandberg's are a better feeling necks and I love the P. The J is good but don't love the tone either active or passive. The obvious thing to do was change pups but then I tried a Tribute JB2 which had a perfect neck shape and width for my hand.
For a highly optioned Fullerton (bought off the rack, not ordered) that was pricey, I was surprised to see zero shielding. The neck originally moved around but now seems stable. There is a tiny bit of fret sprout.
Paint is perfect, as light as a feather, perfect neck shape (and action / set up is decent but not amazing without some fret work), and I like the tone. I was going to replace pups and still may but it sits well in a busy rock mix.
Overall, it currently is my number one J bass.
The Tribute now sets up well and I'm correcting a wiring issue from the PO. Possibly due to poor soldering, but I think these plastic body pots with a glue on metal can are crap. One literally fell apart during removal as they are not crimped.
My other basses are 70's Fenders, 2 J's and 3 P's as a reference. I know about ski jump and heavy but dig the necks shapes and the tone.
To the OP: You mentioned which color for resale and I forgot to mention that G&L's have horrible resale. Not uncommon for a $2k bass new to sell for $1k a year later. If you looking for a great G&L with a strong resale, consider used.
