I've never been a huge fan of XL's but my 2020 JB still has the original strings even though there are a couple packs of my favorite Sunbeams in the drawer. Lazy or afraid of messing up a good thing? Yes to both!

That’s kind of how I feel about it. My G&Ls sound and play better than any of my others so I don’t want to mess with it.

I agree! I was quite shocked at how good the XLs felt on the G&L Fullerton

I’m keeping the XL 45-100 on both G&Ls. Other than that, I also like Dunlop Super Bright Nickels and DR Pure Blues

This is how I was with my JM4 when I first got it. It came with NYXL's which, to me, are very bright. Ordered up some nickel DR's (my "go to") but then the NYXL's grew on me....

Im really curious how those DR's would sound on the JM4. But like @Jim C , lazy and/or afraid.

FWIW, I've never been disappointed with Sunbeams meaning I haven't had a bass with other strings that were replaced with Sunbeams, and then switched back. Also, I'm really particular about changing brands and get ready. It must take me at least an hour with cutting to the perfect length, cleaning the frets, fretboard (if it needs it) & adjusting action and intonation.

Hey guys, I am about to place a custom order for my first G&L JB. I picked out some options I wanted, but I am stuck on choosing a particular color. I have it down to three options so far. Curious to see what you guys think, but also I wanted to which of these colors would be better for resale in the future.

Option 1. Alpine White Body with matching headstock, Ebony fretboard and either a White or Black 3 ply PG.
(I like the idea of the Ebony FB and Black PG against the Alpine White body and headstock, I think it could be a cool contrast, and have a sleek modern look. Imperial Storm Trooper? But I wonder if I could get board of White after awhile. Or maybe not LOL!)

Option 2. Himalayan Blue with matching headstock, Ebony fretboard and White PG
(The Himalayan Blue looks to be a really cool color and different. But it is a bit out of the norm, I love the color but I am not sure about it on a bass, and I also worry about resale with such a unique color. Could be really cool though.)

Option 3. Lake Placid Blue with matching headstock, Ebony fretboard and White PG.
(LPB has always been a great color, but I already have a P bass now with that color was looking to maybe do something different. Also, there seems to a plethora of LPB G&L basses with LPB out there especially with all the Fullerton Deluxe's in that color. But, maybe there is a reason for that, and maybe the JB would hold its resale better with that color option. And it is a stunning color.)

I have attached a few pics with the color combos. I definitely want the Ebony fretboard with white binding so all color combos would include that.

1. The pic of the Himalayan Blue has the exact options I would select.
2. I included a couple of Alpine White pics (one is a guitar with the color combo I was looking at) I couldn't find a pic of a JB with the exact color combo.
3. The LPB would be the exact color combo but shown on a guitar in pics.

One other question, with regard to the G&L White options, which is the whitest of the white options out of Olympic White, Alpine White and Pearl White?

I think what you really need to do is find a dealer who has had good results in getting custom orders delivered on time and as promised with exact options. Not looking to dump on G&L but know a number of people that have not had good results without going through a dealer with experience and history with custom orders.

Wow OK good to know. I was going through Music Store Live. They seem to have good ratings. Has there been any issues with them?

Yep Sunbeams are my #1. I have a set of Nickel Lo Riders in the drawer I've been dying to try also.

When I first played my 62P in the music shop in 1968 (or 9) it had the original flats on. Loved the bass but hated the flats so bought a set of Rotosounds as they were on special offer (and I was a poorly paid apprentice).

It has had other strings on but probably 80% of the sets have been Rotos, the current set are 66s as are those on my L-2500.

Out of the options you've listed, I'd rank:

Looks:
Alpine White with a black pickguard
Himalayan Blue second
LPB

Resale:
LPB
Alpine
Himalayan Blue

That being said, a unique color serves both to limit the audience interested in a secondhand bass and to draw in those it speaks to particularly nicely.
I'd take a Himalayan Blue or a Shoreline Gold any day over another 3TS or LPB, but that's just me.

Taking both looks and resale into account, Alpine White is likely the most sensible choice.

P.S.
The issue with placing options/custom shop orders with G&L isn't with the dealers themselves but rather with G&L's lacking QA procedures, it's mostly a matter of having a dealer who is happy to quickly interact with G&L to right whatever wrong might occur. While my SB-1 did look nice in gloss, I am glad I caught it posted on their social media before shipping to correct it to the ordered Satin Frost.

I am not a huge fan of blue so me saying white isn’t really a fair opinion. I assume the binding is for the board. I think black body binding would look amazing on any of those colors. Curious why you want an ebony board. If I would have known ebony boards on ebmm stingrays have a tendency to dry out and produce fret sprout I would not have bought my stingray with ebony.

G&L and ebmm quality is both equally superb. From the things I read on this forum it’s more about the ebony.

I would love to buy a custom G&L but it’s just to difficult to choose because what I think looks good might not look good in 6 months.

Good to know. I have read nothing but great things about G&L and after many years finally decided to pull the trigger. The QA issues that have been mentioned are surprising. Should I look into Sandberg etc? I am done with Fenders.

Yes the binding is for the fretboard. I have Ebony now on a Fender Elite and its been maintenance free. I also have Rosewood but it sucks up oil like a sponge. Too fragile in my opinion. I have had Maple with gloss finish in the past but it can get grungy over time.
