Hey folks - if I was to run a single MFD P pickup (ala SB-1) in one of my P basses - what volume and tone values are standard? I'm gonna guess 250k for both pots, what cap value for the tone? .047?

And is there a special kind of magic to get their online store to respond to emails? I got contact details from the magical Ken Baker of Basses By Leo forum. Have emailed them a few times now asking if they will sell pickups directly internationally (as opposed to me buying them through a dealer) but no response. Does anyone know a better way of making contact or better still does anyone have experience buying directly from the G&L Online Store internationally?

The schematic doesn't give the values for the capacitor and the resistor. When I installed the pickup on my Precision I just used the values of the first gen SB-2. Sounds perfect to me...

Not really. Different body shape, pick guard, bridge pickup location, nut width, passive/active vs. passive etc. Quite a few differences actually.

After a bit of checking, I found that the clover leaf on the E tuner was moving very slightly if you try to move it. I had this with a tuner on a Yamaha a while back. If you put your finger on the clover and play the E string, no noise.

Rather than going to all the faff of sending it back and being without the bass for a while as the guitar shops aren`t open and are online only, I thought I would just order one from the online shop. $17.95 gets me a new tuner but then postage to the UK is $53.00!!! For that price I can get a set of 4 Schaller tuners that do the job fine from the UK.

To be honest I`m not impressed with the quality of the tuners on a premium instrument and will be sending the tuner back to the shop along with the bill and see what happens. On another note, the knobs will be getting changed as I`m not keen on the big silver dials. So I had a peek and 2 of the pots were solid shaft and one was a split shaft. A small point but I`m begining to have doubts about G&L quality. Having said all that it`s a really nice bass.

Amazingly, the tuner rattle is not that uncommon on a G&L. I've must have played 100 Fenders and never seen this before. It took me quite a while to discover it was the tuner as the noise was much louder at the other end of the neck. Turns out this is not that uncommon either. I was going to put the tuner in an arbor press to retighten but folks on this board advised against it.
The factory fix? Put a drop of super glue at the point where the flat part of the key attaches to the shaft. Amazingly this works but seems so jive.

Agreed that at this price point, mixing split and solid shaft pots is really sloppy.
Look up the video of Cheech (from Cheech and Chong) visiting the factory.
You can see how unorganized the shop is.
It's taken me quite a while to debug a highly optioned Fullerton JB, but I'm happy with it now. Considering how quickly they drop in price, used G&L's seem like the best option.

I can't answer the email safe-word question, but I have successfully bought pickups from their online store and had them shipped to Canada.

In a custom bass, I'm using a TonyStyler with an MFD which has all sorts of different capacitor values. They all sound interesting in their own way. .1 will give you some serious dub rumble, and both .047 and .022 will give you more standard sounds. I actually use even lower values to effect a nice resonant frequency around the rolloff for some songs.

My old pre-CBS Jazz had that problem. That may have been back before SuperGlue was invented. Since all the tuners were sorta binding, I just bought new ones. So, not unique to G&L. But not near as common as has been reported here on TB, either.

Well, of my 4 G&L basses, 2 had that problem. So that's 2 tuners out of 16. Seems a bit too common I think. Replaced both tuners and all is right with the world.

What email address did you use @Jim C if you don't mind me asking? I'm reeeaaally keen to grab an MFD P pickup as opposed to any other P pickup on thre market - just need to know if I have to do this via a dealer, or whether I can buy from their online store.

On the web store page, you could try to add your item to a cart and go to checkout. if it lets you pick a country, you are golden...

I tried it and you can pick Australia as your address, so you should be fine, so long as, the shipping charges are acceptable.
