G&L Order Placed...the Waiting Begins!

I too have been impressed with any US made G&L I've picked up - guitar or bass. You are getting an outstanding instrument for your money. Downside is resale value absolutely sucks BUT a G&L is generally such a good instrument you're not going to want to part with it.

Yeah I don't intend on parting with it. I used to buy and sell a lot of basses but once I settled on a P-Bass, I haven't wavered. Right now though I have a Fender Am. Std. which is going to get sold when this comes in though. I just prefer the quality of G&L to the Fender so that's the only reason otherwise I'd be keeping it.

Very nice. I'm planning on a fretless too but I still don't know what color. Oh well I still have 3-4 months at least before I make that decision.

The knobs were reasonably priced. I paid about $15 and some change for the two.

Nice meeting another New Hampshirite. I used to live near Brookline when I was in Massachusetts. I was in Westminster (near Townsend which is on the border). I drove through there all the time to get to Manchester where I am now. You're aware that [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] isn't far from you right?

I did just recently discover Guitar Gallery too. They're a G&L dealer. I'll probably get my next build through them.

They actually don't have a store front. They're based out of an old baptist church in Milford and you have to order online first and then go pick it up when you get the confirmation email. But it's still hard to find via online directions or GPS. The address is 20 Mont Vernon Rd, but Google Maps and most other directions takes you a few miles up the road out of your way. But I found if you put in the directions for the Rite Aid across the street it gets you there. That's 15 Mont Vernon.

Basically though you just drive straight up 13 into Milford (past the 101 ramp) into the center of town. You'll see the post office and a big white church, that's Just Strings. You'll see the Rite Aid across the street.

I wanted to get the quartersawn more for stability than resonance. I live in New England and the bass is in a room that gets a lot of sun. I feel like with my Fender I'm having to adjust the neck more than I should. Not that it changes a huge amount, but enough where I notice. I like my necks with barely any relief.

My G&L necks are very stable down here in Philly, which has wide temperature and humidity swings. The JB with quartersawn seems a little more stable than the SB-2 with flatsawn, but my 2003 Fender with a graphite reinforced neck is similar. The G&L necks can operate with less relief, and allow very low action. I think this is mostly from the Plek fret leveling, but perhaps the 12" fretboard radius helps. Regardless, you're gonna dig it.

I had an SB-2 around 2006 but I don't think it had a quartersawn neck and this was before they started using Pleking I believe. But it was one of the most stable and playable necks that I've had.

Well I got the knobs in but unfortunately while I was installing one of them on my Fender P to see how it looked, it split in half. I was told that sometimes happens but it's extremely rare. My guess is the set screw had a hard time breaking through the wood and when it did, the pressure of it pressing against the pot shaft caused it to split apart. With the other knob I made sure to tighten the screw with the knob off the pot to make sure it breaks through and that worked fine.

So since I would need a replacement knob I decided to have a new set made without the knurling. It really interrupts the grain on the cocobolo I think. It's so pretty that it's a shame to ruin it. So I had Clayton make me another set, but without the knurling. He's only charging me for one new knob since he's replacing the broken one and taking care of shipping himself.

I'm very happy with his level of customer service.

These knobs are actually darker as you can see. They look more like rosewood. The previous knobs were more orange than I expected so I requested something a little darker. Apparently cocobolo varies greatly.

A little update.. Ben @ Jim's music talked to G&L and it looks like it will be another 3 weeks tops and then it will be finished. I've been watching G&L's FB page every day to at least see if they put up a picture of the body. Apparently they had a delay getting some bodies painted so it's a little behind schedule.

Hopefully you don't suffer any delays. Mine took 14 weeks (tomorrow actually). They had a paint booth delay and then ran out of pickups.

The dealer is actually even more annoyed with them because one of the frets got dinged or something and he had to fix it. But he said all is good and the action is down to 2/32" which is the lowest I've ever had on any bass.

Well apparently they ordered a few others that were more involved with wood binding and what not, that came in 6-7 weeks ago. They had delays with the paint booth and then ran out of pickups.

Awesome, I'm glad it's finally done. Seems like they are shipping a lot right now.

Mine is shipping from the dealer to me tomorrow. That stupid thanksgiving thing delayed it's movement a couple of days. I'm hoping to get it Friday, but more likely Monday. Maybe we'll have matching NBD threads!

Well I got it but no time to take pics yet. It's gorgeous and exactly what I wanted. But I'm having a setup issue so I'm taking it to a dealer nearby to have them look at it.
