G&L Order Placed...the Waiting Begins!

Right. The occasional failing barrel jack is not a "G&L" issue. Like all their hardware components, G&L used a quality jack. They don't skimp on materials.

But even high quality barrel jacks have a history of failure. Not the greatest design, evidently. I've had them fail on a few basses, but never a G&L (not yet, anyway).

I think G&L has abandoned the barrel jacks altogether recently. My new MJ-4 has a football-plate jack. It's a nice robust unit, I'll be very surprised if it ever fails.

But I wanted to mention it here too.. I talked to Chris @ G&L Warranty and he's putting in a new order for a brand new bass. I do want to feel good about G&L and I think wiping the slate clean and starting over will be the best option.

But, to put things even more in my favor, I'm having them keep the bass the same as far as the neck and pickguard go but change the body. I'm going with a little known finish called Old School Tobacco Sunburst. I was lusting after it after I placed my original order, and this puts them in the position of having to give me an upgraded option.

I think this is the best option for everyone involved honestly.

*edit* They're letting me keep the current bass until the new one is finished.

The probably is my local dealer isn't that knowledgeable in fixing these issues, at least past the jack. The ground issue may leave him stumped. He says usually if there is an issue they always send the basses back to G&L.

Sending it back to them will be even more of a waste of my time and I'm afraid they'd make me foot the shipping. Like I said they made me feel guilty for the fact that they had to foot the shipping the first time for the bad neck.

I wouldn't want to send it back to G&L again, either. Not for just that elecs issue. That's something that can be fixed by any halfway competent tech, for cheap money. Unless it's the pickup itself, which is not likely.

Sounds like your dealer is jockeying position, getting ready to wash his hands of the whole affair.

In addition, if a shop told me they might not have enough expertise to fix a hum problem, I wouldn't even let them "try". Rather just do it myself and have them pay for any parts needed.

What is surprising is that apparently G&L didn't test drive the bass after fixing the neck issue. Hard to believe the elec problem occurred during shipping.

But then again, after Leo passed, BBE sent out countless basses without the little rubber dampening bits previously located inside the pickup mounting springs, resulting in the infamous G&L "spring ping" problem that went on for years. For years.

Makes one wonder if anyone at G&L even plugged them in before letting them out of the factory. Had they done so, they surely would have heard the racket those springs were causing.

I was told that in the case of the neck replacement they just plug in to a guitar amp to test the neck. They don't do a full test of the whole bass.
But see my post above. I think this is the best solution. Winning me back as a customer is best for everyone. They do make great stuff, I just got a dud.

That's more like it. Sounds like you have their full attention now.

That burst looks nice. Is that a Premier Finish? Will it include an ash body? If so, you may want to ask them about the weight, if that is a concern.

It's a Premier Finish, on Ash, but I don't think it's very well published. It sounds like one of those finishes that they'll do but you have to ask for it.

I'm not worried about the weight because I always play sitting down.

I'm also going to mail them a pack of the strings I use and they're going to install them for me, that way the nut is cut right for them (heavier gauge flats) and the bass comes set up for them.

This is working out then and thats good. Its a great color choice as far as I can see and I just want to add one thing. It is a common problem for the G&L product to have issues with the Jacks. If you go to Bassesbyleo.com web site, there is a whole thread about changing them out because it has become an annoying issue and G&L geeks like to fix things themselves. I'm sure its not there just because.

It's NOT a common issue on the LB bass, they use a standard switchcraft style top mount jack.. As does every pbass and jazz bass ever made.

I saw this finish in person just this last week. It is amazing! The burst color looks like a mix between honey and tobacco. The back was finished entirely in that color. Loved it.

Does anyone know how these non-publicized finishes work? I've spent years looking at G&L site and the G&L bass generator at americanguitarandband, and I've always been bummed that they didn't do any walnut or any other darker premium finishes.

Would a dealer know what's available? Or should I email G&L?

Really that finish shown on that guitar, but done in a dark-ish non-burst would be pretty close to what I've been looking for.

Well I heard about it on forums and then saw it on their Facebook page. Some dealers might not know but some might.
